lol wait but why are people mad over macklemore's gay rights speech like

Basically it’s along the same lines as why people are mad at Miley… for profiting off of something they are not. People aren’t mad at Macklemore for supporting gay rights or making a speech about it, they’re mad because he (and many others like Ellen) are acting like he’s the first man in hip hop to declare his support. They act like Rap, as a genre, is inherently a homophobic genre, when actually it has made a lot of strides to be more inclusive and quite a few hiphop stars have come out of the closet or come out as support for LGBT rights. But they aren’t getting any press. No one congratulates them. It has everything to do with LGBT erasure (the erasing of actual queer people’s voices in favor of an Ally, and a white one at that which has a lot to do with Racism, obviously). The LGBT community is angry that this is happening again, so blatantly. There’s many queer artists that could accurately tell you what it feels like to oppressed and hated and about the hardships you face for being not normative, but instead you got this dude here telling you he found out he could draw and his internalized homophobia kicked in and got scared and cried about it.

It would be different if he were to come out and say “hey here’s a lot of other artists who are queer and they say some great things! Listen to them! They deserve it!” (But he hardly even gives credit to Mary Lambert, the chorus singer who is a lesbian.) It would be different if he were to take all the profits he made from Same Love and gave it to LGBT youth centers. But he’s not. He’s profiting off of other’s hardships that he will never have to face. 

People aren’t mad because Macklemore because he is rapping about something that needs to be talked about. We’re mad because of the circumstances around it that are all too familiar.
