This was from last September: my brother wanted some dog paintings and I completed these with the support of precious dog photos from several friends and then I dived straight into siltober and didn't manage to post these. I basically never focused on animals in my art before this so this was a really meaningful learning experience

Artwork submission for this year's @zineoftideandflesh! The irony of this quote is perfect for the piece it turned out to be. Thoughts and close-ups beneath the cut.

So, something I've really wrestled with during this piece is horror vacui, and how it resonated with my view of Mercer. Even though the Beast has crowded Mercer across more than half the canvas, I could not stop seeing spaces and gaps in the Beast that took me a conscious effort to resist filling in.

This anxiety to fill the space through and within the overt presence of the Beast struck me as a parallel of Mercer's aggressive revision of any hint of uncertainty in the Beast, exerting on Gage a directorial control of "where to look" as she presses on. What is "real" to Mercer, however, illustrates in this work as a violent unreality that forces upon our eyes, a dreaming that obscures the landscape, concealing the path behind her. Is the Beast then a creature pursuing its prey, a trail growing behind her steps, or a weight dragged forward by her momentum?

I first had this idea in 2024 tbh but the amount of work I knew it would involve put me off until I saw today's prompt. I knew I wanted to draw something that would reflect the role of 'prayer' in the TSV's society and I felt I'd grown enough to expand this idea!
