Medieval makeup

One of our groups recent projects was a deeper look into beauty treatments and cosmetics in 12th century. Sparked by a line in a song translating "trader give me the colour" we looked in various period text sources and found out that there was indeed makeup in 12th century unlike the gospel of the reenactment scene says up to now. One source actually contains a complaint that the ladies need so much colour that there´s not enough left for making miniatures. *grin*

The ladies had facial water, base and rouge and lipstick. We have now started to try out some recipes and turn them into a program which we display during our events.

Here is a picture from the premiere in Düppel where a medieval lady gets made up to represent properly for important visitors.
