My friends say im not mixed because my skin is like Maya rudolphs im too dark for them but not dark enough to be the black that I am? They literally tell me I'm white... and I don't even know how to react,
Your racial identity does not have to be determined by the shade of your skin, but rather your racial make up. If you say you are black because that is how you identify, then you are black, even if you are a white-passing person. As multiracial people, we individually are the only people who get to decide how we racially identify, even if the people we love do not agree or see us the way that we identity (which really sucks, I know.)
As far as how to react when your friends say things like this to you, you need to let them know that it isn’t about them. They do not get to have a say in your racial identity because ultimately, you are the one walking around in your skin, not them. Also, you need to let them know that when they say these things, it makes you feel unaccepted and unloved. Multiracial people get enough animosity from the world at large because of our races as it is … we don’t need it from the people who are supposed to care for us unconditionally, too.
