After seeing @demons-n-deities post abt Malachi and his paleness, it reminded me that I never really explained the black markings on my angel designs

So here you go a rough summary of why they all have black stripes/spots;

I call it “rusting” since the process is based off copper oxidation. All angels start pure white and gradually develop black markings as they are exposed to dark energy from the mortal/demonic worlds. All angels are affected by dark energy, but rusting is most common in guardian angels and older angels who spend more time around mortals as protectors or fighting against demons when necessary.

An angel’s halo acts as a mini conduit of energy - while an angel is in Heaven their halo collects innate energy and then feeds it to the angel when they are outside of the holy realm. However, when a halo starts running out of pure energy it will draw on the energy in the world around it.

Some angels have minimal to no rusting and are either very young or work exclusively within the holy realm. The holy realm - or pure realm, heaven - contains no dark energy and burns away residual darkness carried over by traveling angels. Contrarily, the demonic realm/Hell is the main producer of dark energy; angels within Hell experience rusting at an accelerated rate and often have extremely unstable energies (halo drawing on dark energy).

The mortal realm/Earth contains both pure and dark energies as a result of being “between” the other realms. Guardian angels are stationed on the surface to help protect from the threat of demonic forces, while demonic powers linger to ensure the holy beings don’t control the free beings.
