I started writing a jondami fic where they were dating before Jon left for space and how that would change the story. And I realized that it doesn't make sense why he goes off to space without Damian for a whole summer with his grandpa that was already shown to be crazy.
He already spent a whole summer in space, with Damian. How was going with his grandpa going to be more free than that? Why was he so eager to grow up so fast? Also some day Damian is going to receive the message Jon sent him in space and he's going to be really sad about it. But since it's time travel and Jon still spent like 2 years in space, couldn't they go find him and bring him home, creating a paradox older Jon while he's 12-13?
Okay maybe that's an awesome fic idea... but anyway I still don't know how to write around Jon leaving for space without even saying bye?? Over an event that happened a whole year ago (Titans of Tomorrow arc, I made a post about it on here)...
I gotta say I think it's bad writing, unless Jon just really doesn't care about his friends and his planet. They have written him like that before, but I dismissed it as stupid then, too.
I don't think I care about a Jon who doesn't care about his friends and planets, so I won't accept that!
Okay wait maybe I can salvage this: he wants to grow up quicker like Jor-el promised because he worries he's too childish for Damian. Maybe he thinks it's how he can save their relationship (platonic or not) that he perceived as doomed.
Fuck Bendis honestly, Jon just straight up has no character motivations (that he acts on anyway). He's just like, what the author thinks a kid might do. "Kids wanna grow up fast and rebel against their parents, kids want to go to space, kids want to time travel" like he thinks kids are so impulsive to disregard every other character motivation just because something is sufficiently sci-fi? I have three disorders that make me act impulsively and even as a kid I wouldn't have acted like that.
If you tell a kid he's not going to be able to talk to any of his friends or family all summer he'd think you were punishing him. Jon can have plenty of character building adventures on earth or with Damian and he knows that because he's done it and had a lot of fun.
