iknoweveryone: Misty Dawn

The last two Thursdays, I've run into Misty on the Ave. First was near Campus Parkway, where we plotted going to a Sounders match. This last time, I had popped into Solstice to get coffee before heading off to Fremont. We crossed paths at Solstice, sat down, and chatted a while. In conversation, the time that Dave B and I serenaded Misty came up again, so I leave with the words:

Misty Dawn, what's that flower you have on Could it be a faded rose from days gone by? And did I hear you say he was a-meeting you here today? To take you to his mansion in the sky?

My friend Daniel was having his birthday party at The Bait Shop. After cupcakes and a few frozen drinks, I looked over and saw Eva at the next table. As we are no longer coworkers, I do not see her often. So I moved my chair over and chatted for a few minutes.

In between bouts at roller derby yesterday, I briefly checked Facebook--I know, I know. I saw that my old grad school friend had posted some pictures of the halftime shenanigans. What's more, I recognized the angle of the photos to be similar to that which I could observe from my seat. Using my keen sense of spatial geometry, I figure she was seated several sections and a few rows below.

During the bout, I scanned the seats for her to no avail until I was further surprised to zero in on the characteristic profile of Mr. Dave B. ("As you can see, we've had our eye on you for some time now, Mr. Anderson."))Sitting next to him, heretofore obscured by some others, was Erin H, betrayed by her great hair. I went over, we chatted, we made plans for dinner at the Polish Home.

iknoweveryone: Nara H

7th February 2013

I was going to a lecture by a former Information School professor of mine, so I was on UW campus in the evening. Before the lecture, I went to the restroom. As I was washing my hands, I hear, "Hi Amy!" It was Nara, a colleague and former Urban Archives student who I don't see as often because both of our work/school lives conspire against it, even though we try our best to plot happy hour or reading group.

As Nara was not from my iSchool sphere and this was a lecture by iSchool faculty, it was a complete surprise running into her. Also, this may be the first time I unexpectedly ran into somebody in a tiny, random campus bathroom.

experiment: the new "iknoweveryone" tag

So it's getting a little ridiculous, this useless superpower that I have. The superpower is my uncanny ability to run into somebody I know while out in public. It usually happens while I'm out walking down the street, in any neighborhood. I never thought it particularly odd until other friends started pointing it out to me just how frequently it happens. I just thought it was a fairly normal occurrence. My partner finds it quite humorous. Sometimes, it even happens far away, in other cities. I have actually now begun to wonder about this myself.

One of my favorite things about living in cities is the sheer, simple pleasure of running into someone in public, for example, either while stepping off the bus or just walking. Those brief encounters and serendipitous conversations, to me, are just one of the sweet things of urban living. In fact, I only somewhat jokingly say that "they are both urban and urbane."

So after another one of these encounters yesterday, I have decided to run this experiment. I will attempt to document these encounters. Maybe I'll take a snapshot.

I still maintain that it's not so much that I know everyone. Rather, I think it's more accurate to say that everyone knows me. There's a subtle distinction. However, in recent years, I have started to think that maybe the former is true as well. But that's a philosophical question for a later time.
