Niche Vocal Synthesizers 1: Acme Iku
Discussion of sexual content below!
Acme Iku (whose name literally means "to cum an orgasm) was created December 27th 2007 as a part of the series 'MAIDLOID' which was a soundboard designed to produce sexual sounds for erotica content, the original concept for her being a "cute but lewd character." As such, the noises she could make were limited to moans and screams. Beyond this, she appears in the game "Super Strip Fighter IV" by StudioS (the company that created her.)
She gained a small amount of popularity within the vocal synthesizer community for her "housemaid android" concept and some users imported her voice into UTAU. Her voice, because of this is extremely robotic sounding and infamously hard to tune with.
Much later (2023) she was imported into UTAU again, but this time with a new design that leaned into the "cute" side of her character and proper vocals by Sayaka Kazuna after being approved by the original studio. Her distribution stopped in 2023 because of some absolutely insane stuff that happened on twitter, feel free to read about it here.
Her last notable import is a fanmade one released 2025, in which she was created with a mix of both her maidloid recordings and UTAU voice provider. This design went back to her sexy elements and also notably gave her glasses, a now common addition among fans.
She is primarily used in covers, some of which play into her more 'mechanical' aspects, such as this Butchers Vanity cover. Some also choose to face the nature of her origins head on with covers of songs like Machine Love.
By far her most popular original song is Chaosmaid, an intense breakcore song about sexual abuses that combines her voicebank with her original soundboard to give an eerie feeling of dread. The creator of this song, Paraoka, has made several other songs using Iku some of which are nightmaid and doll of love.
Her story is rlly interesting and I wished people used her more. I've always been a fan of non human sounding synthesizers (as you can see by the Adachi Rei theme lol) so I was excited to research about her.
