In this audio clip, Ken Smith, who played on the famous 1963-1964 basketball team, recalls running into a Pekin player in a resort swimming pool in Texas, decades after Pekin defeated the Appleknockers and ended their seemingly implausible Cinderella story. Last month, Ken Smith, along with Ken Flick, Chuck Neil, and Jim Neil, reunited in Cobden, IL for the 50th anniversary of the storied championship.
In the Photo: Ken Smith (50) jumps over Pekin defender, Amel Massa (43) as he puts up a shot. The Appleknockers were the sentimental favorites of the state tourney in Champaign. One newspaper reported that they got a two-minute ovation from 14,000 of the 16,000 fans in attendance at the final game March 21, 1964.
