South African Spider-Man rescues trapped illegal miner
An unknown man donning a Spider-Man mask came to the aid of a trio of illegal miners stuck in an abandoned South African mine.
According to Independent Online, the anonymous man was also an illegal miner. He wore a mask similar to the iconic American superhero in order to hide his identity.
Three illegal miners had gotten trapped at the abandoned Durban Deep gold mine, near Roodepoort. When the “Spider-Man” learned about the bad news regarding his colleagues, he immediately called emergency services. Unfortunately, emergency services could only enter the abandoned mine with the permission of the Department of Mineral Resources.
Not wanting to waste time, the “Spider-Man” decided to try and rescue the beleaguered illegal miners on his own. He was assisted by other illegal miners, but the high amounts of gas in the abandoned mine prevented them from succeeding.
Finally, the Department of Mineral Resources authorized an urban search-and-research unit to enter the mine. The “Spider-Man” immediately volunteered to guide the unit to his friends. They arrived in time to rescue one illegal miner; the other two had already perished by then.
The Durban Deep gold mine closed down back in 1993. It is known as the "Grand Old Lady” amongst miners.
