Ghost Rider by Theresa Rose Ditson Via Flickr: "Ghost Rider:" In the 1980's, just outside of Rhyolite, Nevada, a spectacular ghost town off the road leading to Death Valley, California, a group of prominent Belgian artists, led by the late Albert Szukalski, created a self-described art situation consisting of seven outdoor sculptures. The artwork is copyright-protected and any commercial photography requires approval and a monetary donation to the non-profit organization, Goldwell Open Air Museum, that maintains this area. (I did obtain permission and made a financial contribution to this effect.) This is just one of the sculptures that adorn the grounds, and when I visited one morning, I had the thought to come back late at night and capture the north star behind the ghostly figure's head to then portray the circular star trails that would appear over time with the Earth's rotation. This is a combination of 177 images taken over more than an hour for the star trails alone, layered with foreground exposures using off camera flash to illuminate and create a spectral glow upon the figure. The tires, long since worn and flat, add perspective to the time and weathering that this piece has endured over the years.
