Bottoms Up is an album by jazz saxophonist Illinois Jacquet which was recorded in 1968 and released on the Prestige label.

“Even in 1968 when the jazz avant-garde was becoming quite influential, tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet played in his own timeless style, performing in an idiom little changed during the previous 20 years. With the assistance of pianist Barry Harris, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Alan Dawson, Jacquet is heard throughout this CD reissue (which adds a previously unissued “Don’t Blame Me” to the original program) swinging hard and generally expressing himself in a typically extroverted fashion. “Bottoms Up” (a relative of “Flying Home”), “Jivin’ with Jack the Bellboy,” and Jacquet’s excellent original ballad “You Left Me All Alone” are most memorable.” – Scott Yanow/AllMusic.

Ben Webster, Illinois Jacquet, Ike Quebec – The Angry Tenors

“Hey, these guys are mad! Not really, though, but the “angry” in the title refers to the fact that these are early recordings by the players – mostly done during the 78rpm years at Savoy, when all of them were getting their start in small group sessions. Webster plays with Oscar Pettiford and Johnny Guarnieri on a quartet session that includes “Blue Skies”, “Kat’s Fur”, and “I Surrender Dear”. Quebec is with Guarnieri in a quintet with a guitar, on the tracks “Jim Dawgs”, “Scufflin”, “IQ Blues”, and “Girl Of My Dreams”. And Illinois Jacquet rounds out the record in a sextet with Bill Doggett on piano and Freddie Green on guitar – on tracks that include “Savoy Blip”, “Doggin With Doggett”, and “Minor Romp”. – Dusty Groove.

Tenor great Illinois Jacquet roars throughout “The King,” “C Jam Blues” and “Take The ‘A’ Train,” makes a warm ballad statement on “Easy Living” and on “I Wanna Blow Now” he takes an enthusiastic vocal that is highlighted by a surprisingly effective imitation of Ella Fitzgerald.
