Hi! My name is Isabella and i'm studying in turin (where i live) fashion design and my biggest goal would be to become a fashion illutrator. Could you give any tip? for example what have you studied to become an illustrator or what exercises did you do to improve your technique... because i'm worried about what i can do after the graduation to become a very fashion illustrator. Thank you for your time!
Hi :)
I’m not an expert but I can certainly tell you what I did. I studied fine art and sewing since childhood, but my college degree is in fashion design. Design school is where I learned fashion drawing. I worked extra hard in school because I was paying for my own education, I asked my teachers a lot of questions, and put my online portfolio together during breaks, so I was prepared for work when I graduated. If I had the money, I would have also gone to art school. I would recommend an illustration degree if you are able, but learning how clothing is constructed was also very helpful in becoming a fashion illustrator. In school I learned a lot by copying the work of professionals, but only for practice, NEVER publicly post work that copies others. Nuno Da Costa is an illustrator I learned a lot from. To improve my work now, I draw every weekday even just a little. Drawing consistently is the only thing that truly helps me get better and faster. I try to just create art on a consistent basis and post it to social media. As I go, I add and subtract elements of my style and try out different methods and tools that I like working with. I hope any of this helps you ;) and I wish you the best of luck in your education!
