Lands of the Tranquil Neighborhood
Some #planedoodles from my travels! A character I’m working on for a long project...I’m just in that early stage when you’re falling for a character & want to hang out all the time! Im sharing this particular set of sketches to make a point about the power of creative community, & artists supporting artists. I’ve been working on this one story probably 2 years now, very on & off, with it half in the background of other work. Over that time it’s existed as various books, animations, you name it, but its only now getting close to feeling ‘right.’ I’ve never doodled the character before, never sat down to get to know her. I absolutely, totally would’ve given up on this project if I didn’t have a supportive writers critique group AND a supportive artists crit group that I’m in internet-contact with regularly. On my trip to England a couple of weeks ago I went to visit a human from aforementioned artists crit group, @suzannedore , & meeting her is why I drew these sketches on the plane home! I struggle to be brave enough to tackle my big projects, the ones that really mean something to me. I struggle with avoiding the scary work by filling my time with less scary work instead. Because the scary work is the work with the most pieces of my soul in, that means the most important of my work rarely gets finished. But Su is always working on how she can do more courageous work, how she can courageously get her work out there, no matter how hard it is. Su has faith in herself & keeps on truckin, no matter what. My little time hanging out with Su was an absolute gift, it totally set me alight with inspiration to do the work I’m meant to be doing. And I’m so honoured to get to make my arty journey alongside such brave, gritty artists! So here’s to artists being in community with each other, & artists supporting each other. Let’s do it more 💖🍀💗🙏 . . . . . . #artist #artistsupport #critique #artistsgroup #artgroup #community #artcommunity #artistcommunity #artfriends #illustratorcommunity #togetherisbetter #friends #together #sketch #kidsillustration #graphicnovel #wip #powerfulgirls #toughgirl #character #characterdesign (at Houston, Texas)
