That kind of statement would be a real boost of confidence if there was an 'other guy'.
It's not as bolstering to one's confidence when you just stupidly ran into a darn pole and face yourself a rather large goose egg on your forehead.
"Ha! Yeah! Uh...he's...rather stiff. I really tested his mettle..." She tried to grin through her rather lousy attempt at humor, idly reaching up to gently poke the bump. Wincing as soon as her fingertips made contact, she quickly withdrew her hand, grabbing for the frozen peas.
