This. This is my 4 month overview from May-August. It’s not fancy. Actually, it looks kind of “ugly” cause it’s paper taped to my studio wall. But!! I’m such a visual person, and seeing my big goals on display is a great reminder of what I’m reaching for. I have to gently remind myself that being busy doesn’t mean that you’re necessarily being productive. This “big picture” calendar came from that very notion. I had tons of things in my icalendar, but how much of it was really working towards my 5-year / 10-year goals? So! I sat down and figured out my goals. One major goal is for me to be a tenured flute professor. I had to take off the rose-colored glasses and take a hard look at what my strong and weak suits are to help me towards that goal. I realized that academia and service was super strong, but perhaps I could give myself more performance opportunities. So I did just that. I Auditioned more and competed more this year than I ever had. What are your goals? Where can you “take-a-step-back” and visualize the next 4 months to keep yourself on target? I’m the first to admit that it’s super easy to get off-track, and that’s okay. We are not machines nor computers. I find myself having to refocus or regroup everyday. Try your 4 month calendar. Put only the BIG goals on there and find out what ACTIVE steps you need to take in order to achieve YOUR dreams. I encourage you to consider not putting menial tasks on there like errands or groceries. Stick with the main goals. Note: another reason I like it on the wall is because I physically stand next to it. I feel a sense of power and can see it from a bird’s eye view.
