My darling Ilsa,
By the time you read this, I’ll have crossed the French border into Germany. I am sorry to have deceived you, but I promise that it was for your own safety. If anything were to happen to you, I would lose my reason for living as well as my reason for fighting. I cannot rest while my homeland is ravaged by the Nazis, nor can I ever respect myself if I refuse to fight to ensure that our children can live in a world where they won’t be beaten or tortured for having Jewish blood or speaking their minds.
I am going to Prague to lead the Resistance there. I can’t let you endanger yourself to follow me, and I beg you to wait until I return—and I shall return. I love you more than anything in the world—have faith in that, and in me. I have asked some of our friends to look after you, and to provide you with news of our progress. It’s too dangerous to use the regular mail, but I promise to write as often as I can through messengers. Know that my heart is and always will be with you.
Yours eternally,
Victor
