;; I’ll contain this under a read more because of length and mild gore (e.g. injury/blood/gunshot mention). I went overboard. TL;DR: Ekko is fucked up and I’m hurt.. ;;

Ekko hissed in white-hot pain, hand pressed heavily over the wound in his side, trying to listen to what Ezreal was telling him, but mind whizzing almost too fast to do so.

He’d really done it this time.

The attack he had tried to coordinate was definitely on a level other than his own, and the teenage rebel had sensed it the moment he had stepped foot onto the chosen battleground. He should have backed out then, but how could he? Those fucking street roamers had killed his friend’s family, hadn’t they? He had promised her vengeance. So she would have it. He always kept his word.

The mistakes he made had started with miscalculating the amount of targets there actually were. He had expected three. There were five. Consequentially, even when he brought along two of his best and brightest, fighters, trap-riggers; it still wasn’t enough for this degree of battle, and Ekko was stuck trying to defend his friends as more and more men emerged from the shadowy streets of Zaun.

An easy 3am fight had quickly turned into a run for the children’s lives. That’s all they were, after all. Realizing that this couldn’t work, wasn’t going to- Ekko worked to minimalize casualties. His friends ran out first. He, being more experienced, quicker, more prepared- he was the distraction. And equipped with his gadgets, it worked for a while- his friends were safe, at the very least. But one straggler had followed him.

One missed step, a stumble, a roll across the pavement, and a gunshot. That’s all it took for the boy to hit the ground, hard, and to realize that he needed to rewind, now. He didn’t realize that he had even been shot until he couldn’t breathe right anymore, his adrenaline was moving so fast- his only assets strewn across the alleyway. He couldn’t reach it. The zero drive. He could see it from the corner of his eye, glowing and ready, and he gritted his teeth to lunge towards it- too far away. Ekko cried out as a searing pain raced through his ribcage, his blood beginning to drip onto the cold ground beneath him.

And then he was scared, genuinely and wholly, the first time in a long time, as the man blocked the streetlight at the end of the alleyway, his blacked out figure moving towards him.

The only reason he was still alive was because of Ezreal. He could only pray his friends were still alive because of him, not dead because of his mistakes.

The rest of it seemed a blur. He didn’t know where he was, he only knew that he was hurt, badly. And he didn’t want to die, especially not in front of his boyfriend, no, he knew he could die, and if he was going to, it should’ve been alone. Not in front of someone who cared about him. His desire to protect and guard exceeded beyond what he could control, without fail, and while he was always concerned about those around him, always- right now, Ekko just really wanted to live.

He didn’t know what to say or do. Not in the slightest- sure, he had patched up other people, so many times, but he couldn’t focus enough right now, couldn’t think- it drove him to a panic, maybe it was because of blood loss, maybe because of pain- but he didn’t know, and that’s probably what scared him the most.

“God I- Jesus, Ez, shit, what do I do-” The time-traveller’s voice came out shaky and a higher pitch than normal, his lungs firey as his heart threatened to explode out of his chest with the amount of adrenaline it contained. He shook his head to clear it, quickly- but all it did was make him dizzier- his blown out eyes flickered between Ezreal and the gunshot, his blood soaking through his fingers like deadly honey from a hive.
