Ack! I didn’t know your birthday was today! Happ burf! ^_^
Just wanted to whip up a little something for my favourite Undertale artist, so I hope you don’t mind a lil’ more Soulfell fanfiction. I don’t generally like to jump ahead of people’s unfinished works, buuuuuut I had this idea and had to run with it. Perhaps it could be a potential behind-the-scenes ‘something that could have happened’ sorta thing?
I didn’t have much time to spend on it, it’s a little short and a lot rough, but I hope you enjoy it anyway. And I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening!

“knock, knock.”
The practice was well rehearsed, but still never failed to add more sparkle to the skeleton’s smile.
“Who is there?”
Apprehensive was the first word to come to mind. Sans noted that Toriel’s tone carried more concern than usual and it was no small wonder why.
“canoe.”
“Canoe who?”
A wistful sigh punctuated the second reply and already Sans knew this wouldn’t be one of their more fun talks.
“canoe lighten up? i’m trying to tell ya a joke here.”
“I am sorry Sans, I just worry for the child. My mind has been on nothing else since they left. I had hoped… that they would return to me.”
“return..?” Sans replied, puzzled. “tori, what do you mean?”
A few seconds passed before Toriel answered. “I… do not understand your confusion. Of course, I mean that I had hoped for the child to accept my offer of returning here should they find their journey too difficult. I… wished for them to remain here, safe, away from the dangers outside.”
“what?! tori, you can’t do that! the human’s been seen by everyone in snowdin! what if the kid did come back and asgore found out?”
“Well, what if Asgore found out? I hardly think he would break down this door just to obtain the child’s soul.”
“lady, you have been in there a long time…”
“What else was I to do then? I could hardly send them away and not offer them refuge if they were unable to continue.”
“but you could be putting everyone in there at risk-”
“You do not understand!” Toriel snapped, her tone becoming hysterical. “I have already lost my children! And many more after them! I cannot bear to… to lose…”
Sans could hear his friend give in to her tears as words were replaced with sobs.
“tori, i’m sorry.”
“You don’t… understand how it feels to be unable to protect those you love. To feel so helpless. To feel so guilty.”
“you’re wrong.”
“I…”
Toriel calmed herself, allowing Sans’ words to sink in.
“I am sorry, I should not have assumed.”
“it’s ok, it’s not something i’ve told you after all.”
“Was it… your brother?”
Sans heaved a heavy sigh. “yeah.”
“Would you… mind if I asked what happened? You don’t speak much of your past.”
“lady, i don’t think you’d believe me if i told you,” he said, his tone a little lighter before muttering to himself, “nobody would even remember…”
“I see. If it is something you would rather keep to yourself, I shall not pry.”
“thanks, tori. so, uhh…how about i put you outta your misery and let ya know what the kid’s been up to?”
“Oh! Oh yes, please do!”
“well, they’re currently with papyrus, as it happens. just visited grillby’s before that, i told ya how much of a softie grillbz is right? oh, and don’t get me started on the canine unit. you won’t believe how the kid managed to win them over!”
The rest of the conversation took on a much lighter note as Sans recounted the human’s adventure thus far as he had witnessed it. Much to her surprise Toriel found herself laughing at some particular highlights, even.
If only for a moment she feared a little less for her child’s safety as they made their way without her.
