THIS IS A 2010 MOVIE JUST FYI!
I think if you wanna read a better review of The Way Back then read Roger Ebert's review on rogerebert.com because I agree with everything he says and will basically be repeating everything. The Way Back is an unheard of movie that came out late last year and was even nominated for an Oscar for Best Makeup. It's directed by Peter Weir (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Witness (filmed in Philly!), The Truman Show, Dead Poets Society) and is supposedly based on a true story of a bunch of people who escaped from a Siberian gulag during World War II and hiked alllllllllll across Asia. Obviously The Way Back has inspirational-struggle-for-survival written all over it. That's pretty much why it's a mediocre movie.
It is beautifully photographed and the cinematography and locations are breathtaking to look at. For that it doesn't deserve to be penalized. The problem is that I didn't really care about any of these characters. I love Ed Harris to death but in this we don't really know anything about him and quite frankly I didn't really care if he died or not. The same goes with Jim Sturgess (that adorable guy from Across the Universe), Colin Farrell, and Saoirse Ronan. They're all quite underdeveloped. We know that Saoirse Ronan is a runaway teen and all and my god I love the actress to death (GO SEE HANNA AND YOU'LL AGREE WITH ME) but what about the other people?
Another problem is that we don't really see HOW these people learn to survive. The whole movie is just them hiking and struggling to stay alive. None of it is very believable. Overall the story is just too unnecessary to put on screen. We've already seen movies like this. It's without a doubt well-acted and made seriously and beautifully shot but it's not worth seeing.
