Charlie’s mind is full of fog, the ability to comprehend is no longer an option, for he isn’t able to anymore.
He doesn’t remember what happened, nor who was involved. In fact, most importantly, or what stands out most to him, is that fact he doesn’t even know where he is.
I mean, realistically, he is sitting-laying- on the forest floor, a throbbing pain exploding from his side. But, generally, he doesn’t know which forest this is nor how he got the injury he has. Or is he imagining it all, the pain, the place he’s in, or the feelings he’s feeling? Is he just in bed safe and sound, just having a very interesting dream?
No, that couldn’t be true. I mean, that’s what I think, but God knows what Charlie thinks.
I would like to think he believes that even if it is a dream, there isn’t any way the pain he’s feeling isn’t real. It feels so…genuine.
Charlie would get up and look down to see if the injury is actually there, and it could be, but the thought of his dreaming eyes seeing it wouldn’t be proof that it’s real.
He wants to wake himself up, if it is a dream, that way he wouldn’t have to experience whatever pain this is. He likes to imagine himself waking up, opening his clear eyes so he can at least in his head prove to himself he’s dreaming.
But there isn’t just pain and confusion cloaking his mind at the moment in this potential dream. There’s a feeling that he’s experiencing, something deep inside him that he is unsure the name of. He feels like he failed at something, like he was sent on a quest but was unable to complete it. Or did he complete it, but just in the wrong way?
He couldn’t know, but his eyes scanned the sky nonetheless, confusion taking a seat beside him and making eye contact for a very long time.
His brain was so deep in thought- meaning he was really digging to find the source of the feeling. (Besides the never ending pain in his side, but that’s not the point of discussion right now.)
He fails to notice how sticky the air is around him, and how the moist ground is glueing itself to his clothes, his skin, his hair. The humidity floated in the wind, through his hair, but once more he didn’t realize. Not that it would make a difference if he did, but it’s a good way to express how distracted he was.
What he did notice was that the pain seemed to worsen, so deep inside that he felt like it was making its way through his blood, allowing itself to travel all over his body.
He winced, moving his leg comfortably. It was just then that he realized (about time, huh?) that this wasn’t in fact a dream, based on the touch he felt from the wet Earth when he moved his leg. His senses came back, the world around him closing in on him but in the most comforting way possible.
He groaned his way to a sitting up position, his legs stretched out before him. His pants were scoffed up, some holes patched but some looking fresh like he just made them not too long ago. But what was considered ‘not too long ago’? A year? A day? A month? A minute?
How long was he asleep? Or was he asleep at all, just looking at the sky for such a long time he didn’t realize he zoned out?
He pushed the incoming thoughts out of his mind, not wanting to go down a thinking hole again. He reluctantly looks down, shaking hands -which were also scratched up- pulling up his shirt to see the damage he just knew was there. He had to prove to himself-
And so there it was. And it looked just as bad as it felt. Blue and purple blurred his skin, forming a bruise he didn’t want to look at much longer or he would see colors from his stomach too.
So he looked away, now feeling the intense pain and nausea. A breeze took his mind off the potential feeling to vomit, the settling frozen in time earth moving all around him, green eyes matching the greens in the woods that was unknown to him.
Charlie does eventually get up, with great effort it seemed but in reality it didn’t take long looking at it from outside his perspective.
Blood instantly rushed to the places his body needed, the soft relief he felt was great. He doesn’t make an effort to move or speak, not only because no one is there, but he feels like if he does he will disturb the Earth. He feels like if he does, the wind or something will inferior, telling him that it should do the speaking instead. So he lets it, breezy air and moisture having a conversation Charlie can understand all too well.
The sudden interruption- that he didn’t make and that’s for a fact- made his tired pain-filled body to flinch softly, head whipping around to see the source. It was a sharp snap, like someone’s foot laid down on a twig or stick. He heard crashing, leaves smacking the Earth despite their protests. The once was settling world was no more, now full of fear and suspense towards what was coming.
He heard the source before he saw it, was piercing screams echoing through the trees, making them known. The sound waves had no pause whatsoever, just an infinite noise that didn’t stop. No breath taken in between, just haunting noise bursting throughout.
Charlie grew worried himself, but he knew his little baby fears were nothing compared to what the person was feeling. He also felt something else brew in his chest beside the feelings of worry, pain, and nausea. It was concern, deep empathy towards the stranger as they now darted last, the noises of terror and pure fear blasting fresh in his ears, making its way to his head so it could vibrate there for a while.
It was someone, that was for sure….and that’s about all the information Charlie could give. No details were provided when the person ran past, just a blur that was there then not.
Charlie suddenly felt his heart quicken, and he couldn’t help but think that shouldn’t be a good thing if he’s injured. In fact, come to think of it, he shouldn’t be feeling any of this. He should be in bed, safe and sound, now waking up with a gasp at the weird dream he just had.
But no, it is no dream, and if it was the loud scream, desperate for help and guidance, would definitely shake him awake.
The urge to go and provide that guidance was too great, despite the voice in the back of his head reminding himself he doesn’t know them. Or the fact he could possibly run into the cause for the screams.
He forced his leg out, a searing pain traveling from his side but he forcibly ignored it, making his way to the woods.
The screams were either really far away since the person was running very quickly, or they stopped. Charlie wanted to tell himself that they stopped because the stranger got away from the bad source, and not for another reason. He didn’t feel like seeing a dead person today.
He ended up walking for quite some time, each step of his right leg allowing the stinging in his waist to make itself known.
He kept going until he arrived at a small clearing, running water filling his ears. It was a short stop of pleasant, compared to the ear splitting screams that perviously filled his senses ears.
A dock was there, the wood possessing visible loose boards and growing moss. It looked abandoned, and he felt like he was the first pair of eyes to lay on it in hundred years. He was surprised to see that the sun was setting already; maybe he was zoned out for a longer time then he suspected.
His eyes traveled along the long dock, still peeling his eyes for any sign of a person who could possibly be the one who was ripping his ears out.
He didn’t know how he didn’t notice before, but there was a sense of someone watching him, eyes bearing into the side of his face so harshly he felt like he could cook something on it.
He turned his head quickly, meeting the eyes of someone behind the tree. A girl was there, body shaking as she tried to slow her breaths but very much failing to do so.
Only one of her eyes was visible, and it was looking at him with so much fear yet so much hate he didn’t know what to think. The gaze was sharp indeed, like a knife slicing his cheek so quick he couldn’t have time to dodge it.
He cautiously took a step closer, wanting to help her and assure she was gonna be fine.
“H-”
“Stop!” She shrieked. Charlie stopped dead. Her voice was cut raw, giving him the sign she was the one screaming. “D-” she swallowed. “Don’t come a-any closer.”
Charlie swallowed himself, now realizing how dry his throat was; he seemed to be realizing a lot of things lately.
“I heard….noise.” Charlie said stupidly. He was gonna mention the fact that he heard her screaming, but something held him back from saying it.
The girl was still shaking. “G-get away from me, Charlie.”
The boy took a step back, his mouth forced shut. The reason for her knowing his name was unknown to him, and that fact was confusing him even further. His eyebrows furrowed. He wanted to ask if she knew him, but the urge to ask something else was stronger.
“How do you know my name?” Charlie asked.
The girl was now looking confused like him but still held her composure. “Stop with your games.” She barked instead. She seemed to be slipping through his fingers, slowly itching away and he had no way to stop it.
“I’m not playing any games!” Charlie suddenly exclaimed. “I just woke up here and I have no idea who you are.”
Charlie breathed out, his chest resting after all that talking. He seemed to be always out of ever since he woke up, never seeming to have a chance to calm down. His heart thumped in his chest, trying hard to do its job.
He didn’t seem to pinpoint the girl’s reaction to his outburst, too busy focusing on how to keep his balance. He leaned sideways on his legs, arm reflexively pointing out to catch himself on a tree, eyes dropping once more.
“Charlie!”
Blackness overcame the boy, and all he could see was it spreading as he once more debated if he was in a dream.
A laugh rang in his ears, the majestic noise overshadowing him as he prevented himself from being blinded from the sun.
“Char-lie!” His name was said in each syllable, the girl’s hands coming to touch his arm before shaking it teasingly.
He hummed, smiling behind the book that was in his hands. He knew she couldn’t see him, and that was the whole reason he was smiling in the first place. He was teasing her, testing her, to see how far he could push her before her breaking point.
“Stop reading and pay attention to your girlfriend!” She exasperated, hand shaking him slightly harder than before, desperate for his attentional gaze.
His green eyes though stayed on the words, taking in the story. He heard her huff and her hands let go of his arm, most likely using them to now cross her arms like a little five year old being told no.
“Fine,” she said, sitting up, tall grass stuck to her shoes. “Two can play that game.”
And she stuck herself between his bent legs, reaching out and grabbing the book between his hands. She forced it towards her, now seeing his sparkling green eyes, a teasing fling dancing in them as he finally looked at her.
“You’re mean.” She said, hands closing the book and letting them sit on his knees. She subconsciously started rubbing the fabric on his pants.
He laughed, grabbing her hands off his knees and bringing them to his lips, softly kissing them at the same time.
“Only teasing, my love. You know my mind is always on you even if my eyes aren’t.” He assured. A blush brushed her cheeks gently, lips stretching into a smile.
“And mine, you.” She responded.
Charlie once again opened his eyes, his mind full of fog and unclarity. His senses came over him, his eyes scanning where he was. The feeling of deja vu washed over his brain, faking a smile as it tried to make the old new situation unrecognizable.
He groaned, sitting up once again only to feel the pain in his side once again.
“How are you feeling?”
The poor boy flinched, head snapping next to him only to see the same girl in his memory, face covered with slight fear and cation yet he also saw a hint of worry.
“Good.” He lied, swallowing thickly and hoping his word full of absence of the truth was believable.
She nodded hastily, picking at the loose fabric of her skirt. Her whole dress was covered in dirt and twigs, showing him the rough road she’s been on.
“What happened to you?” Charlie asked bravely, hands going between his legs as he picked the grass, the wet strands feeling cool on his fingertips.
Her eyes got moist. “You happened to me, Charlie.”
This made the boy stop picking at the stupid grass. His green eyes met her watery ones, eyebrows bending down to practically meet his nose.
“Not true;” he said almost curtly, feeling soft anger burning inside him. “I’ve been asleep this whole time. I woke up just before I heard you yelling bloody murder.”
Charlie knew he should’ve been nicer to the girl, especially since he didn’t know her, but in all honesty he felt like he did. He felt like he could be this serious and practical with her without complaint. It felt normal to talk this way. But in this situation, God only knew how normal they could get before they reached their breaking point.
The girl scoffed. “Really? ‘Bloody murder’ you say? Well for a second there I really did think you’d murder me, Charlie. Mind as well.”
Charlie took his turn to scoff. “Rubbish, honestly, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You don’t remember?” She snapped.
“Don’t remember? More like I didn’t do it at all. I told you, I’ve been asleep!”
“Okay, you’ve been asleep! Then explain why I was being chased by my boyfriend through the woods, scaring me to death?!”
Charlie was taken back. He, as in himself, had been trying to hurt her? This lovely girl that deserved the world?
Charlie then sank his head into his hands, his blonde locks being tangled into his fingers. “I don’t know, anymore.” He whispered, sensing unwanted tears behind his eyelids. “I was asleep, and I woke up, with a huge bruise that I knew nothing about, then I heard yelling and I went to check it out. Then I met you and then passed out again. And now I’m here. I don’t know.”
The girl bit her lip. “Something’s going on, Charlie.”
The boy looked at her, her eyes still a little watery but they had some determination and fiery written right in them.
“Well if we’re gonna figure it out, I’m coming with you.”
