Friday night fusion returns with this Jean-Luc Ponty record that’s just ok. The lineup also includes Tom Fowler (who also played with Zappa & the Mothers, including during the time Ponty was in the band), Daryl Stuermer (toured with Genesis et. al.), Allan Zavod (also played with Zappa much later) and Mark Craney on drums (never heard of you, dude.) The first cut is some weird country - gypsy - fusion hybrid, “Tarantula” is the “rock” cut on side one, and the stuff in the middle is almost some straight up Weather Channel / hold music sounding shit. The title-cut is all of side two, in four unnamed parts cuz why not. “Part I” has a little part that’s weirdly like a bit in Zappa’s “Marqueson’s Chicken” and the rest is also kinda decent and jazz-prog-sounding or whatever. I’ve had this for a couple years without exactly dying to listen to it, and now feel like $2 was about the perfect price for this one. Not the best thing in the genre or whatever, but not terrible.
