Kevin Conroy, Who Gave Voice to Batman for 3 Decades, Dies at 66 With a distinctively deep and raspy voice, Mr. Conroy spent more time playing Batman than any other actor, without ever showing his face. Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman for three decades across almost three dozen TV shows, movies and video games, died on Thursday at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He was 66. His death, from intestinal cancer, was confirmed by Vaughn C. Williams, Mr. Conroy’s husband. Without ever showing his face, Mr. Conroy spent more time playing Batman than any actor who donned the character’s signature cape and mask on screen. His distinctively deep and raspy voice helped define the character in nearly 60 different productions, including 15 films, 15 animated series that spanned almost 400 episodes and more than 100 hours of television and two dozen video games, according to DC Comics. “I’ve been really fortunate to have gotten Batman, because he’s a character that’s just evolved,” Mr. Conroy told The New York Times in 2016. “It’s just been a character where you can ride that wave for 24 years. Keeping him alive, keeping him from getting just dark and boring and broody, is the challenge.” “It seemed to me that he was Batman,” said Mr. Williams, who was married to Mr. Conroy for about 10 years. “He had an early life that was troubled and had some negative ailments, but he turned that into an incredible personal strength.” Despite not being a comic book fan, Mr. Conroy landed the title role in “Batman: The Animated Series” after its producers, unimpressed with some 500 auditions, were transfixed by the “gravitas” that Mr. Conroy brought, Alan Burnett, a writer and producer on the series, told The Times. The show premiered on the Fox Kids network in 1992. “It’s so much fun as an actor to sink your teeth into,” Mr. Conroy said of the role. “Calling it animation doesn’t do it justice.
