My 4 year old was in a zone reading @akcfuller's latest book, Little Freddie's In a Zone! If you have melanated boys who love sports, like mine, then this cute book is for them. What I appreciated most about this short read was that it introduced children to a different top, Black male athlete in various athletic arenas--not just your stereotypical sports, like basketball and football. For instance, my sons learned about forgotten legend and tennis player, Arthur Ash. Very detailed life-like drawings of current and past athletic legends made it easy for my 4 and 6 year olds to identify the greats they were already familiar with. And, the brief additional facts about each athlete at the end of the book was just enough information to keep my youngest engaged and asking questions, rather than zoning out with information overlaod. While I'm aware sports is an area many believe people of color have enough representation, finding children's books that center Black & Brown men and boys is always a struggle. It's important for me to introduce my kids to books that speak to their interests and have images of people that look like them and family members. This is something I always practiced even before I had children and was a classroom teacher.
