hawaii five-o finale but when steve is sitting at dannys bedside danny takes a turn for the worse, just like the doctor warned them might happen, and he doesn't make it...and while steve is begging danny to wake up, the nurses keep trying to calm him down until they have no choice but to sedate him. and when steve eventually wakes up and goes to check his phone he notices that he's at home...in bed...in the clothes he was wearing last night...and when he finally turns his phone on he sees that it's the same day only twelve hours earlier..and he also sees that the last notification he has from danny isn't the phone call where it all went to shit, it's a text from the night before reminding him that they're picking up charlie tomorrow night...steves used to nightmares, so he figures this was just an especially realistic one until the day starts playing out exactly the way it did in his "nightmare"...until he gets to the location where danny is being held a little earlier and ends up being shot because he's not thinking straight, and he figures this is fine because danny is laying next to him and if he has to die at least its with danny and then he closes his eyes...only to open them and see his bedroom ceiling...

in this latest installment of me being too invested in the idea of professor danny...i love the idea of danny not being able to find a detective position when planning his move to hawaii, so he shifts gears and remembers 'oh shit i have a degree unrelated to police work let me see if i can find a job with that for now.'

so he moves to hawaii and he has to adjust to teaching instead of solving crimes, but he ends up actually kind of enjoying it, he gets along with most of his coworkers and his students seem to really like him(apparently they had a shitty experience with the guy that came before him). he works regular hours which helps him look more reliable than he did as a detective when going to court over custody, and yeah maybe its a little less exciting than chasing criminals but that's fine.

and he meets john mcgarrett(how they meet im not sure yet) while out with grace one day and grace of course manages to wrap him around her little finger immediately and john makes a few suggestions on things danny and grace can do for fun after danny tells him they're fairly new to the island. so then john and danny become something close to friends(john misses his kids...danny misses his parents it just works)...and then john gets killed and danny starts hounding the police to see if they're making any progress on his case(he annoys tf out of them) and then steve comes and before danny can offer any type of condolences steve is basically interrogating him on why he's so invested in his fathers case. this of course somehow ends with danny still getting dragged along with steve to investigate, (he doesnt have to follow him…this is definitely not his job but for some reason he cant help but get drawn in by the crazy) and steve ofc knows danny was a detective(he did his research) and still convinces(forces) him to join the task force(the task force steve agreed to head solely to force danny help him solve his fathers murder) and sure danny misses being a detective but he's also developed a flow as a teacher so he agrees to be a part of the task force but only part-time(he does a lot more research than canon danny). this of course leads to steve just walking into dannys classes and waiting for him in there when they have a case. all of dannys students think they're married and after learning they aren't are still convinced that they SHOULD BE

once his students learn steves name they jokingly call danny ‘professor mcgarrett’

sometimes i love to imagine an au where danny has a restaurant when he and steve meet, and since steve doesn't have the excuse of danny being his partner to always have him around he's always coming up with stupid reasons to just hang around the restaurant(even if he's in the middle of a case) or to invite danny(and grace once he meets her) to his house to hang out, and is just unintentionally making it very obvious that he's feelings things beyond friendship for danny and danny realizes "oh this guys repressed as hell if this is gonna move forward at all i gotta make the first move" so he does and they do get together..

and once they're together steves somehow spending even more time at the restaurant(if danny hadn't actually seen five o in action he'd be second guessing if steve even really had a job) and, because he spends so much time just watching and listening to danny be great at his job running a restaurant, he's unconsciously picked up a lot knowledge on what goes into it...and before he or danny even realizes it steve is damn near helping run the restaurant...

danny says he has to call the repair guy for one of the ovens but turns out steve already emailed them while he was at work...one of dannys cooks is sick so now he's short staffed?no problem steve knows the recipes so he can step in for the night...tourists that come in and even new regulars all just assume danny and steve have been together way longer than they actually have and opened the restaurant together.

once grace is older she wants to work there to make extra money, and danny is so happy to have his baby working with him but freaking out because jfc she's old enough to have a job when tf did that happen??? and then nahele comes into the picture and steve knows the best place for this kid is gonna be where his partner is with their own kid(because steve is graces second dad obvi)...and then its all going so smooth then ofc steve has to almost die and danny gives him half his liver and danny knows he can't ask steve to quit his job(he knew what he was signing up for when they met), but sometimes little comments slip out while they're recovering and they're both frustrated so when danny recovers and goes back to work he thinks maybe the breathing room will be good for both of them but steve ofc wants to go with him so he does obviously...then once its after hours and its just steve, danny, grace, and nahele finishing up cleaning and then eating a late dinner there, steve realizes that this restaurant has been like a second job for him since he met danny, and he almost lost it and everything that came with it when he got shot and maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing if running a restaurant with his family was his only job...maybe that way he can finally get danny to change the name to Steves...

idk if they ever say when exactly danny and rachel started their affair in season one, but imo it started when matty left and therefore i believe that if steve had just went with danny to confront matt, we(and steve) could've avoided that bullshit...it's as simple as steve doesn't want danny to have to face whatever his brothers doing alone so he walks out with him and gets in the drivers seat before danny can even say anything, and then knowing danny is in no shape to drive, or be alone, after letting his brother get away decides to just take him home with him and ta-da danny and rachel aren't sitting around vulnerable with each other late at night and don't get the dumbass idea to try again...sadly this means no charlie, but that is a sacrifice i am willing to make

or in order to not erase charlie another option is danny and rachel just have a one night stand and then in the morning danny sees he has like 20 missed calls from a worried steve and wonders why seeing that notification while laying next to rachel makes him feel guilty and then after the walk of shame and picking up coffee and malasadas for himself and steve, he goes over to steves house and seeing how concerned he is danny realizes that oh shit he might have feelings for his partner(and maybe just maybe his partner has feelings for him)
