So I've been reading a series of posts by itpiercesskin about what makes a good role playing experience. As an exuberant participant in the famed Lady Blackbird and Microscope games, I heartily agree with everything itpiercesskin has to say about the awesomeness of playing to find out, and the immense satisfaction of superfunctional play.
I haven't read the forge thread (the site is down, or something), so I guess I don't know what the prerequisites are for "coherence," but I wanted to take a second to talk about the importance of trust and understanding in tabletop gaming, and in particular for "playing to find out."
Part of the worry about releasing your character into the wilds of your roleplaying group's collective imagination is that, well, everyone else in your roleplaying group, and in particular the GM, gets to decide things about your character. I suppose an example is in order. This fall I played a campaign of Diaspora, which uses the Fate system like Spirit of the Century or Dresden Files, but is set IN SPACE! I took the role of Ruka Kizmi, the gender ambiguous space anarchist, and my roommate ran the game. Despite being close friends, we ran into some problems around trust and understanding pretty early on. Fate shines when the GM puts players into less-than-optimal situations by "compelling" their character traits in return for shiny fate points (which in turn allow the player some control over the story, usually in the form of asskicking). I did not trust him to "compel" my character to make decisions I thought fit with my character, and he did not entirely understand how I envisioned my character. My mistrust and his misunderstanding entered a feedback loop of me playing my character closer to my chest, and him having less information about my character to work with, eventually leading to an incredibly sour turn in which he actually did compel my character to do something I thought was absolutely antithetical to my envisionment of them, but that he thought made complete sense for them. I left the session feeling betrayed while he left highly exasperated. Many hours of discussion and several sessions later (the finale!), we entered a situation very similar to the one that had caused the sour turn. This time, however, my roommate understood more about what made my character tick, and I trusted him to pluck at my character's core without twisting them into a direction I didn't want to go. My shock at the twist ending in store for my character was on par with what I felt during hatalie's Lady Blackbird reveal that she'd scoured the blue yonder for Uriah Flint because she wants the Dredd Claw back (think about it), and was about as bittersweet as anything I've known.
This post is way too long, so I'll wrap it up quickly. Basically, this has ramifications for GM-player relations, especially because I think there's traditionally been a big taboo over GMs asking their players for input on the story, meaning the kind of discussions that me and my roommate had that essentially saved the game for both of us, "shouldn't" be happening in many RPG systems. Some GMs have started making explicit discussions about game expectations a staple of their first gaming session. Developers may be taking this step further and institutionalizing it as part of gameplay, as in add/ban step of Microscope. This is but one of many reasons why Microscope is so incredibly conducive to "playing to find out," and also, in my opinion, superfunctional play.
