WHO: Mapped Productions was formed and founded out of the Central Saint Martins MA Performance Design and Practice cohorts of 2013 and 2014. We first worked together while on the course, but have since transitioned into the professional sphere. Collaboration and devising are central to our practice. While we work together, we all also maintain our independent and diverse art practices.

WHAT: Nova Insula takes themes, ideas, and issues of The Tempest and addresses them through design and dramaturgy rather than spoken text. By presenting it in this visual manner, the content and story become more accessible to the audience. The original text acts as a jumping off point for the creative process rather than something to be faithfully rendered.

WHERE: The Lazzaretto in Ancona has a long and interesting history. Originally being built as a leper colony in the 18th century, it has also served as military base and a site for importing goods into Ancona. By setting Nova Insula in this particular site, we are engaged in work that can be described as site-responsive. The text and the space stand in conversation with one another, both their differences and similarities adding to the dialog.

WHY: Mapped Productions has produced multiple works that use the format of immersive installation and promenade. We believe that by creating such environments the audience experiences the work more fully and with more immediacy, leading people to move from passive to active viewer. Our approach aims to incorporate a contemporary sensibility to historical texts, which highlight both their relevance and timelessness.

HOW: Your support of Nova Insula will help us accomplish our goals in a number of ways. Your donations will go towards the project’s practical materials and logistics. This project is already on its way to being a great success, but your donations will get us to the finish line!

RISKS AND CHALLENGES: Our greatest challenge is creating a work in a non purpose-built space, where each of these unconventional sites present challenges of their own. But, it is surely the unforeseen quirks that make a unique space for the best of plans!

i am particularly happy to be a part of this new project. a top team of peeps... it's kind of hard to summarize, suffice to say i'll be playing my cello strings with a small crew of incredibly talented musicians in a bespoke immersive 23 speaker setup. SIRENS AND DESERTERS

Club de la Faye's performance Manifest, performed at noisefestival at Institutet 2008 (Malmö), YourSpace (Roskilde Festival) 2010 and Svefi (Haparanda) 2012.

MYTHOLOGY / CRITICAL THEORY

The sirens, who lived in a meadow on an island off the coast of Sicily, were irresistible and lured sailors into their deaths. Listening to their intoxicating songs the sailors steered their boats towards the sound, straight into the sharp rocks of the island and drowned. They only ever reached the shore floating in as rotting corpses. So said the myth.

No ship had ever passed. Not until the day Odysseus and his crew’s journey led them to the island of the Sirens. Following Circe's advice, Odysseus plugged the ears of his crew with wax, so they could not hear. The crew only knew the song's danger but nothing of its beauty. So they could row with all their strength' moving the ship away from the Sirens.

It was in fact the task of Odysseus' crew: “The laborers must be fresh and concentrate as they look ahead, and must ignore whatever lies to one side' thereby fulfilling themselves through work”, wrote critical thinkers Adorno and Horkheimer. Odysseus instead is able to listen to the song remaining: “bound impotently to the mast of the ship”. The bonds prevent him from being seduced and the danger presented by the Sirens is subsequently neutralized. As a result, “the song of the Sirens is completely perverted: it becomes a mere object of contemplation – it becomes art”.

PERFORMANCE / MANIFEST

Club de la Faye will manifest themselves as the weakened sirens, who now seek vengeance over Odysseus, the man who got away. The Sirens will regain their power, if they succeed in seducing the festival guests into participation in a ritual, where they are asked to sacrifice a piece of the life, that stands in the way of giving in to the world of music.

“Med den mytologiske fortælling introducerer Adorno og Horkheimer et kritisk perspektiv på adskillelsen mellem liv og kunst; mellem en sfære i samfundslivet domineret af rationalitet og effektivitet og en autonom æstetisk sfære, hvori kun kunstnere har adgang til at indfinde sig i den sanselige væren. Denne adskillelse er et vigtigt omdrejningspunkt i forståelsen af de romantiske og avantgardistiske kunstbevægelser, jeg interesserede mig for ved dannelsen af performancekollektivet Club de la Faye. Ved vores første performanceinstallation sammen begyndte vi at indarbejde den kritiske teoris billeder  i vores udgave af et performancemanifest for, hvordan vi ville arbejde med en romantisk forestilling om hverdagslivets genfortryllelse.

Club de la Faye bestod af omtrent 13-50 mennesker. Vi dannede os som gruppe i kølvandet af de  demonstrationer for Ungdomshuset og andre fristeder, som blev ført i Københavns gader igennem hele 2007. Listen af fiktioner, kunstnere og kabaretkulturer, vi i Club de la Faye var inspirerede af, var lang. Jeg vil her blot nævne nogle få inspirationskilder i Club de la Fayes manifestationer. I denne sammenhæng er det relevant at nævne den avantgardistiske bevægelse Situationistisk Internationale og Guy Debords samfundskritik af skuespilsamfundet (1972). Heri præsenteres et billede af samfundet som et spektakel, hvor mennesker er blevet tilskuere til et liv som spilles frem for dem, og hvis eneste reelle årsag er at generere forbrug. Situationisterne henviste til, at kirken engang brændte de såkaldte troldmænd for at undertrykke det, man anså for primitive tendenser til leg, som havde overlevet i folkefesterne. I dag fremstår enhver kunstnerisk aktivitet stadig som halvunderjordisk. Noget der varsler skandale. Den situationistiske kultur skulle skabe fuldstændig deltagelse, leg og dialog: 

”Mod den unilaterale, ensidige kunst vil den situationistiske kultur være dialogens og vekselvirkningens kunst. Indenfor hele den synlige kultur er kunstnerne nu fuldkommen adskilt fra samfundet, ligesom de er indbyrdes adskilt af konkurrencen. Men selv før kunsten drejede ind i denne kapitalismens blindgyde, var den i det store og hele ensidig og uden svar. Denne primitivismens afsluttede epoke vil vi nu kunne forlade, for at opnå den fuldkomne kommunikation”. (Situationistisk Manifest 1960) 

Med ’Sirens & Deserters’ som det første performancemanifest begyndte jeg sammen med Club de la Faye  - snarere end at nedbryde scenen - at åbne og bringe folk ind i dens æstetiske univers, for på den måde at arbejde med udøvelsen af kritik gennem performancekunst. Vi ønskede at arbejde med at lade det liv flere af os havde nydt som performere i SIGNAs hermetisk lukkede fiktionsuniverser flyde ind i flere af samfundslivets sfærer I samme bevægelse vi som performere bevæger os ud af teatrene og skaber nye scener og fiktive universer uden for kunst- og teaterinstitutioner, inviterer vi de mennesker, som traditionelt set har været opfattet som publikum, ind på scenen – og begynder at transformere deres position fra beskuere til deltagere.”
