RÓŻNE SPOJRZENIA NA POJĘCIE IMMERSJI/ Different views on the concept of immersion - Frances Dyson
Frances Dyson w swojej książce "Sounding new media. Immersion and Embodiment in the Arts and Culture", próbuje uchwycić pojęcie immersji między innymi w kontekście analogii, jakie widzi ona między wirtualną rzeczywistością a historią sztuki audio. Część z nich opisuje na przykładzie prac kanadyjskiej artystki Char Davies, która konstruuje immersyjne wirtualne środowiska, badające możliwości interakcji z immersantem (pojęcie wprowadzone przez samą artystkę na określenie odbiorcy, użytkownika czy widza tego rodzaju sztuki).
Prezentuję tu kilka cytatów z książki Dyson, które pokazują trop jej rozważań nad immersją.
Wybrany przez nią fragment tekstu samej Char Davies:
Always what was important to me was the notion of being immersed in enveloping space, and the sensation that you're fully enveloped, ... it's not about interactivity but the fact that you are spatially encompassed and spatially surrounded - it's all around - and that's what sound is.

We wstępie Dyson tak pisze o "doświadczaniu" immersji:
The experience of this immaterial, simulated "space" operates through "immersion" - a process or condition whereby the viewer becomes totally enveloped within and transformed by the "virtual environment". Space acts as a pivotal element in this rhetorical architecture, since it provides a bridge between real and mythic spaces, such as the space of the screen, the space of the imagination, cosmic space, and literal, three-dimensional physical space. Space implies the possibility of immersion, habitation , and the phenomenal plenitude. Without space there can be no concept of presence within an environment; furthermore, there can be no possibility for a full-bodied-embodied-experience that interactivity (...) promises. (Dyson 2009,1-2)
Jak widać przestrzeń jest tu ważnym składnikiem doświdczania immersji. Ciekawe, że Davis nie przypisuje interaktywności statusu niezbędnego składnika definicji immersji.
