#Repost Welcome to another @culturestrike editorial cartoon! Last week, news broke that the Congressional Hispanic Caucus met with Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, and that they were told that the Obama-era executive order, DACA, may not be around much longer due to an oncoming legal challenge. The news sent ripples of panic throughout the undocumented community, as DACA has been a program for undocumented youth -who meet specific criteria to be eligible- to have some protection against detention and deportation, as well as access to work permits. The stripping of DACA leaves approximately 800k of its beneficiaries vulnerable to the most frightening practices of Trump's ramped-up immigration enforcement, which has already been targeting some of the most vulnerable undocumented community members in the United States. Trump later stated in an interview that he alone will have final say on the fate of DACA, in a way taking responsibility for the lives of 800k youth who voluntarily turned over personal information to DHS. This brings to light many questions: is Trump really in support of DACA youth? Can he really have final say in helping maintain DACA before the September 5th deadline? Is Trump to be trusted on this issue at all? Our guts are telling us that NO is the answer to all the questions above. This leaves us in a position that all undocumented people saw coming upon Trump's election last November: a big fight is looming. DACA was never a certain thing, it was never supposed to be something on which to be reliant on to build and maintain a life. DACA was always a band-aid to larger and deep seated issues in the history of immigrants in this country, and this administration is ripping it off slowly and as painfully as possible. So now, more than ever, with more ferocity than before, we must fight. Fight hard, fight together, fight as tirelessly as we can, fight for our lives. Because if we decide to rely on Trump and Sessions for a decision on DACA, we are definitely not going to like the results. Art work by @juliosalgado83.
