Daniel Thorne ~ Lines of Sight
Daniel Thorne ~ Lines of Sight
Solo piano records are a dime a dozen, albums made entirely of cello are hardly rare, and even drum-only sets have featured on our pages. Experts of their chosen voice like to stretch it beyond convention and even recognition. Learning that Lines of Sight is composed predominantly of saxophone may come as a surprise for that reason. But it’s not that most of the layers don’t soundlike a sax when…

Immix Ensemble & Vessel ~ Transition
Immix Ensemble & Vessel ~ Transition
Concise in length and unique in theme, Transition is a gem of an EP conceived from inquisitive minds courting a noble musical pursuit. Arising out of two culturally significant UK cities, Liverpool and Bristol, it is a suite in four movements that explores the theme of technological innovation, from musical instruments to machines of war. In today’s device- and algorithm-centric society, thinking…

Immix Ensemble & Vessel - What Hath God Wrought?
GIG LOG :: IMMIX ENSEMBLE, VESSEL & SAM WIEHL
Artists: Immix Ensemble, Vessel & Sam Wiehl Date: 03 October 2014 Venue: 1840 Room, Tate Britain, London Description: In the programme for October's Late at Tate Britain event, this show was described thus: "Immix Ensemble and Vessel (Tri Angle Records) explore the relationship between acoustic and electronic instrumentation with an ensemble line-up of violin, electronically manipulated live saxophone and analogue modular synthesizer. The piece is performed to a film by Hive Collective’s Sam Wiehl, which sets out to explore the idea of transition between analogue and digital technology." Sounds interesting, right? Well, in reality it was one of the most frustrating things I've seen in years. Putting on a performance of delicate drone based music in a fully lit room and with practically no stage - so most of the audience couldn't see the musicians - was not a great idea. What I could hear, from where I stood around 5 meters from the stage area, was interesting, which only makes it more irritating that most of the set drowned in chatter from the crowd. I'm not going to rate this show as it wouldn't accurately reflect the actual performance of the musicians - only the unfortunate circumstances they were asked to perform under. Rating: N/A
