She’s pretty sure he does this on purpose. 

Waits until she hasn’t washed her hair in three days and she’s swimming in one of Benny’s old shirts and no bra before he curls a hand against the inside of her wrist and tugs her from her seat (always away from booze of some kind or another.). 

His palm fits perfect against the small of her back, just like it used to when she was twenty two years old and staring down the soul crushing oblivion of life without Sam. 

She’s pushing forty now. Jack hasn’t aged a day. His stories get more real with each passing year. 

“Sam is gonna kick your ass.”

Jack shushes her with a smile, his cheek pressed against her cheek. 

Shh. Your sister isn’t here. And what she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.

She doesn’t see that pirate in the stories he tells often. But every once in awhile, he slips free. Like when they’re sloshing through choppy water in a thunderstorm, and Jack looks like he’s never been more comfortable in all his days. 

They’re drenched, soaked to the bone, and Dee has stopped trying to stand up. 

But she’s got her eyes lifted to the sky, eyes closed to feel the rain. 

“Cas would love this!”

She doesn’t know if Jack can hear her over the din of the rain, but he smiles at her anyway.
