A deep dream can go through enough iterations that there is no longer any remnants from the original image. At this point, what you see is manifestations of the neural network itself. I think.
The reason you see animals so often in deep dreams is because the training sets used to develop AI are often sets of animals, as animals are something that is already well documented, and it is easy to give a positive or negative response to the AI. (thanks kat <3)
