2014 Grant Awardees from Impact 100 Richmond

A radiation oncologist at Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Laurie Cuttino has nearly 15 years of experience treating patients with a wide range of malignancies. Also active in several philanthropic endeavors, Dr. Laurie Cuttino supports Impact 100 Richmond, a donor education and grant-making initiative that unites women in ideas and action. Impact 100 Richmond operates on a simple strategy: 100 women give $1,000 each to create a $100,000 grant that is awarded to a selected nonprofit. In five years of operation, Impact 100 Richmond has invested $600,000 in the local community. Grant awardees in 2014 included the YMCA of Greater Richmond, Virginia, which provides recovery services for victims of domestic abuse, and Higher Achievement, an organization that works with local schools to provide academic opportunities for young people living in underserved communities. In partnership with the MathScience Innovation Center, Higher Achievement will use grant money to update the science, math, technology, and engineering curriculum, creating elective classes that better prepare students for a changing work environment.

100 Women Impacting Hundreds of Others

“Impact 100 Garden State,” a grant-making organization developed by six New Jersey women working through the Community Foundation of New Jersey (CFNJ), aims to support one nonprofit organization per year with a significant grant.

The concept is simple: 100 women each contribute $1,000 to the organization, which then solicits applications from nonprofit organizations and holds a vote to select one grant recipient for that year’s total funds. By focusing the entire fund on just one organization per year — rather than a multitude of worthy causes — the impact is especially meaningful.

The Impact 100 model is being used to great success across the country. In Cincinnati, for example, the local chapter of Impact 100 has distributed over $1.8 million to local nonprofits since 2001.

As Impact 100 Garden State grows, its two primary goals are to raise funds and begin accepting grant applications in January 2013. The organization will accept applications that cover one of five main focus areas: family, education, health and wellness, environment, and arts and culture. To be considered, applicants must have a current or planned project in Morris, Somerset, Passaic, or Sussex County.

Given the group’s enthusiasm for the Impact 100 model and their collaborative work with CFNJ, it is only a matter of time before their impact is felt across the four counties.
