Chapter 7 - The Post-it Note
It had been a long drive but it was going to be worth it if he was able to prove or at the very least capture evidence of a jackalope before the year was over. It was a routine thing, he goes on a long road trip to find a creature of folklore and legend then ends up sleeping in his van because he couldn't find it. A vicious cycle but it was the kind of thrill he lived for.
The sun had set hours ago and now Matthew had to stop for fuel and to stretch. He locked his car and headed to the truck stop bathroom, pulling his phone out to check the time. It was 3:44 in the morning, he was arriving at the bathroom as a college kid around his age was leaving with a guy in a cool leather vest.
Internally he thought the guy's vest was really cool, assuming they were a couple or really good friends judging by the arm around the blonde boy's shoulders. The guy in the leather jacket leaned in and whispered something to the college kid, whatever it was it made the kid tense.
Matthew brushed it off as lovers quarrel and continued on his journey to the bathroom.
As he exited the stall to wash his hands he spotted something small but very out of place. A simple pale yellow post it note, it had hasty handwriting on it and was stuck to the sink. He picked it up and looked at it curiously, now reading the scribbled handwriting.
Name- Adam Sawyer
Age - 21 about 5' 8" blonde hair and a purple sweater. If you find this, call help. Kidnapped. Please help me
Matthew read it over again, realizing that the brief description was eerily similar to that of the boy he saw exiting the bathroom minutes ago. It sent a chill down his spine to think about it.
He tucked the note into his jacket pocket and hurried out of the truck stop bathroom, hoping to get an idea of where the pair had gone. To his luck he saw the familiar lavender purple sweater getting into a red car. He started to make his way over but the car's engine rumbled on and pulled out of the parking lot to continue onto the freeway.
Matthew hurried back to his van, he topped it off as fast as he could before climbing into his van. He managed to coax the engine to come alive and drove off in order to follow the car. He would have to put all his cryptid hunting experience to good use in order to potentially save this kid.
Something inside of him told him that things would get messy if law enforcement became involved, likely due to the fact that many of the stations knew him from trespassing violations. He sighed and pulled the post it note from his pocket again, gently tucking it into the van's sun visor. He glanced up at it again as he drove, wondering how he and the missing kid had gotten into all this.
