Hello, my fellow dreamers!
"Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny."
— C.S. Lewis
Hardships strike all individuals and families at one time or another. The loss of a spouse or loved one, divorce, illness, job loss, financial difficulties, child abuse, sexual abuse, and the likes.
Most of these things are beyond our control. Nevertheless, I believe that everything happens for a reason; these hardships can make us into stronger individuals.
However, the way we react and deal with these hardships help chart our future, not only as individuals but as a family. Stay close to your feelings, even the painful ones. Sometimes our feelings are scary, confusing, and weigh heavily on our minds and hearts, so we try to keep them at a distance.
On the contrary, we need our feelings and emotions in order to find satisfaction in life. Dealing with the scary and confusing feelings helps bring back and appreciate pleasure into our lives.
Our feelings are the gas that fuels the engine of our personality. They are the source of our motivation. They are the energy, vitality, and juice of life. Without them, our life would not have any determination, personality or color. There wouldn't be joy or creative fun. There wouldn't be a YOU!
We must accept our success and failure as part of our life's journey. We are forever learning and dreaming until the day we get called HOME. Keeping a compassionate and loving attitude towards ourselves and others is something we must heed. This helps us stay in the game of life.
The process of trying, succeeding, failing, getting, up and trying yet again is the only way to develop lasting confidence in ourselves. We all learn through experience and the decisions we make — whether good or bad and knowing we can recover from almost anything as long as we have a strong will, a good family support system, and a lot of faith.
We learn to be humble and develop a view of ourselves as LIMITED creatures that will ALWAYS need help and support of family and friends. I think that no matter how old we are, there's a child within all of us that will need support, mentors, family, and friends to see us through life.
It is easy to count our troubles rather than our blessings, but this kind of attitude undermines our ability to use our prowess and talents. So, recognize the good, receiving it with gratitude is a recipe for emotional health and well-being. This kind of attitude enlarges the possibility that we can make use of all the good God has given us.
There is freedom in taking life as it comes. The good with the bad, the wonderful with the tragic, the love with the loss, and the life with the death. We must embrace all of it to have a chance of true happiness and the enjoyment of our life.
Value ALL of your experiences and mine the treasures of life that lay before you. Slow and steady wins the race. If we are always in a hurry, we thwart our own emotions. We tend to get ahead of ourselves, which gives us a better chance of making mistakes. Sure, we can cut corners or take the easy way out, however, it's not necessarily the best way.
There's an old adage: the slower you go, the sooner you will get there. So, be slow and be disciplined. This kind of approach will lead to LASTING CHANGE.
My family is my biggest support system and should be yours too. Last year when I had a very complex back surgery and another illness that hospitalized me, my two sons, Jason and Joshua, were there for me every step of the way. My sister, Resi was there for me whenever possible. My sons were instrumental in getting my house packed up and getting ready to be sold, as I wasn't able. I don't know what I would do without them to this day.
Last week my entire family pulled together to get my mother packed up and moved to Indiana so she could be closer to the bulk of my family, as she needs much help due to a stroke.
Our lives don't always remain the same. As our parents get older, our family roles and duties change. Be willing to pitch in, however small, to help out.
Your spiritual life will also help see you through hardships. Increase the amount of time you pray. God is listening. Let friends and family know you are praying for them.
Sometimes we just have to take a leap of faith. Follow God's lead and allow your plan to evolve. Taking this leap of faith means taking a step in trusting God to provide what may be needed for our lives. TRUST HIM.
Share our journey with others, serve your community, help others who are less fortunate than you are. Cultivate a little solitude away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Turn to some quietness and take your mind off your problems and put them in God's hands.
Spread love and happiness wherever you go. Kindness in your face, your smile, your words, and a warm greeting. You have no idea what this will do to a stranger's day!
Exercise your power of choice: No matter what happens in life, you have the freedom to choose joy over despair, love over hate, forgiveness over revenge and growth over stagnation.
Remember, a crisis can evoke the best in us or the worst in us. The CHOICE is yours!
"If we believe that tomorrow will be better,
we can bear a hardship today."
— Thich Nhat Hanh
