HEADCANON …

vern is a demonic creature, his purpose here on earth now isn’t to live. he’s considered to be an 'adversary to god and divine beings', 'doing the devil's work', etc. because of what he’s done and now does. because of what he’s turned into.

again, a wendigo is described as a demonic creature, so that’s what he is. 

but he’s not the worst. he doesn’t just kill & eat anyone, and he can still be a civilized human being. he can be nice. and he can like people. 

vern only kills people he hates with a passion, people who he knows aren’t going to make it, or who will suffer the most in life. but overall he doesn’t have many people that he hates, and he doesn’t just go around killing people who are suffering.

the thing is; vern knows when the suffering won’t end, and he likes to convince himself he’s doing them a favor. like someone born with a major disability who’s unhappy and will be for the rest of their life ? or someone who is almost dead anyway ? he’d consider killing them. 

basically: vern isn’t totally reckless and homicidal. he’s selective and he still has morals. i guess. for the most part. we’ll leave it at that.
