Can’t believe how wonderful and strange this project has been. As someone who lives deep in emotional space, I’ve found people’s responses fascinating. I wrote about Gun Violence and Civil Rights, and meaningful Torah, and people don’t always respond. But this experiment with artificial intelligence, which is changing the world faster than we realize, has generated lots of interesting reactions - good and bad. I’ll be in conversation about this brave new frontier with Rabbi Ashira Konigsburg and Russel Neiss at Ramah Darom’s Pesach Retreat in just a week, and look forward to sharing the exploration in communities I’ll be visiting. an excerpt from the introduction to the forthcoming fourth volume of The AI Torah Commentary: "... I’m writing these words on Monday, February 26, 2023. It is many things today, including the 20th anniversary of the passing of Fred Rogers, Mr. Rogers, of blessed memory. He was my neighbor, and he taught me how special I am. He taught millions. You might wonder why I include this in an introduction to the fourth volume of the AI Torah Commentary, this one on the Book of Numbers, Bemidbar. Here is why. Mr. Rogers would never have guessed that twenty years after his leaving this world, a rabbi would be able to type his name into a search field, find a video montage of his sweetest teachings, cry quite a bit, and – facing the very screen that brought his beautiful face close to mine once again – subsequently share a Jewish reflection on the Weekly Torah Portion (it happens to be Parashat Tetzaveh) using some of his wisdom teachings. But, given the technology available, his spirit lives on, and I hope my teaching brought his memory honor. This is, of course, a simple and well-intentioned example of channeling of the past into the present for the sake of the future. It coursed through my human soul and not through the algorithms of an artificial intelligence language map. But the intention matters, as the technology I used is value neutral, and can be utilized for good, for bad, and often for inanity. Today, it brought a gift back into my world, and perhaps, through the use of technology, I helped extend Mr. Roger’s kindness into the worlds of others. The AI Torah Commentary, Volume 2: Exodus has been published! A brief note, reflecting on some conversations I've been having about what this is and isn't: AI is going to disrupt everything, especially online content. It's all new. It's all fraught. Here's what I actually did in creating this commentary: conceived of the project, composed an introduction, selected the voices from the past, crafted specific prompts for chatgpt, edited for accuracy, formatted, created the cover, submitted for review with the independent publisher, and published. That should suffice for the ethics. Nothing purports to be "the voice of," but rather "in the style of", and all figures chosen fit the parameter of no longer being alive and not having spoken hatefully of others. I feel good about those aspects. But this whole AI thing is very complicated. I've taught about this every morning since the day Volume 1 went public (you can find it on the UJA-Federation of New York FB page in the archived videos starting last Tuesday). All 5 volumes should be completed within the next few weeks. My goal is to prompt thoughtful conversation and debate about this brave, strange new technology, what it means and what it doesn't, how it differs from classic techniques like bibliodrama and how it resembles imaginative, historical fiction. It's a brave new world, where a concept can become actualized like this. I hold in my hand the world's first AI Torah Commentary. Wow. I've completed the manuscript for Exodus, and am beginning work on Leviticus. No idea what any of this means in the long term, but am learning rapidly, assessing, witnessing something new. Technology is a tool in the world, constantly evolving, and Torah has never shied away from innovation - we must carefully study what this new step means, unafraid to play and make mistakes with every step.
