Adding borders in Adobe Lightroom 4
When we search for creating borders or making frames for a picture in Adobe Lightroom 4, typically, this is what we see.
We have a good set of ways to work it out. Some using the Print Module, some using "Stroke Border", and definitely one of the most popular one - LR/MOGRIFY, and not to forget the 'Effects' tab in the Develop module. I have tried all of them, and by far, LR/Mogrify has been the most satisfying from them all. So why am I writing this when it is a known fact? Well, I am into printing Fine Art Prints for photographers and corporates, and my print studio is based in Hyderabad, India. My recent project needed me to create borders to 30 prints that i was making for "Pixel8ed", and this is how i ended up creating those borders. As an example picture, i will be using a picture of a Leopard, shot by me. (For more pictures, please click here)
Lets create a 1 inch border to this 8x10 picture. 1. Go to the Print Module and click Page Setup.
2. Once you click on "Page Setup" a small dialog box appears on the screen. Click on the Paper Size drop down menu.
3. From the drop down menu, search for and select 8 x 10 in
4. Select the Layout tab, and change the cell size to 6 x 8 in, as we want a 1 inch border on all sides.
5. Select the "Page" tab, and click on the "Page Background Color".
6. Now click on the box beside it and choose the color of the picture border.
I have chosen Black.
7. Almost done now.
Click on the "Print Job" tab, and click on the "Print to:" option.
Change that from "Printer" to "JPEG File".
8. Make your custom adjustments in this tab, and click on "Print to File" to save the picture with a 1inch thick Black border/frame. Make sure to click "Custom File Dimensions" and give the values for the desired 8 x 10 inch picture.
9. Here is the finished product.
This is a bit of a lengthy procedure, but what i like about this, is that it gives me precise amount of border for any sized picture.
