Mina's teeth clenched as the carriage gave another jolt. When the headmistress had requested that one of the schoolteachers go to Canterbury to meet with a family hoping to admit their daughter, she had volunteered without hesitation. Mina had been enamoured with the railway system for years, and gleefully took any opportunity to ride a train.
Alas, her leisurely excursion along the south of England stopped abruptly at the last station in Ashford, and the rest of the trip was scheduled to take place on a carriage, rumbling along through the dense forests. It was somewhat of a letdown, but she accepted the downgrade with dignity.
As was often the case, she was not alone on this ride.
Mina had been attempting to read a book, but the carriage moved far too much for her to make any progress. She closed it, smiling at the woman across from her in a genial, welcoming fashion.
