      𝘕𝘌𝘚𝘚𝘈𝘙𝘖𝘚𝘌  𝘋𝘐𝘚𝘓𝘐𝘒𝘌𝘋   the  way  it  felt  as  though  the  strange  woman  were  poking  around  in  her  brain  --  it  was  almost  unfair  ,  that  she  was  left  to  answer  all  these  questions  ,  meanwhile  hers  went  unanswered  (  though  ,  many  were  never  even  asked  )  .  she  has  had  to  consider  what  she’ll  decide  ,  when  her  father  finally  puts  his  foot  down  about  the  matter  of  her  relationship  .  his  tactics  were  smart  ,  allowing  her  to  have  her  fun  while  at  school  ;  it  would  make  the  ultimate  ending  much  easier  ,  and  much  more  fair  .      ❛  i  suppose  i’ll  have  to  listen  to  what  he  says  ,  in  the  end  ,  ❜  she  concludes  ,  her  brows  knitting  together  in  a  rather  distressed  way  .  for  a  girl  who  grew  up  getting  everything  she  wanted  ,  and  still  often  did  ,  it  was  a  horrible  reality  to  imagine  .  not  to  mention  ,  its  time  was  approaching  quickly  .  ❛  i  have  to  remember  that  the  future  is  bigger  than  just  me  .  ❜      her  selfish  nature  was  something  that  she  would  have  to  shake  ,  and  nessarose  was  more  than  aware  of  that  .  her  father  never  said  a  word  against  it  ,  afraid  of  hurting  her  more  than  anything  --  but  elphaba  had  warned  her  many  times  how  she  mustn’t  be  too  selfish  .  she  was  a  cog  in  the  machine  of  politics  ,  and  a  selfish  politician  ,  while  common  ,  was  never  liked  .      ❛  and  i  love  my  sister  ,  ❜  nessarose  says  firmly  ,  a  huff  of  a  breath  ,  as  if  any  other  answer  was  unheard  of  .  ❛  my  father  has  a  strange  version of  the  story  ,  and  i’ve  never  known  what  to  believe  .  you  must  understand  ,  i  was  a  baby  .  ❜

A GRIMACE CROSSED ELSA'S FACE AT the comment, her head only just not bobbing in agreement. Ever since the coronation, she had been taking up lessons to catch up on some of the social skills her isolated childhood had left her without, and unfortunately that had included dancing. And given she was not yet confident enough to join the other guests on the dance floor, she remained off to the side as she had always done.

"I tend to hope for some engaging conversation at least," she said, tucking a few more strands of hair up into the braided bun that was piled upon her head. Her dress for the evening was upon a mannequin at her side, ready to be the finishing touch. Perhaps doing her own hair was still a holdover of a time when she would allow no one to touch her, but she still preferred it. At least if she got poked in the head with a pin it was her own fault.

"Although I must admit to not being the most enthusiastic party-goer," she admitted, turning in her seat. "I tend to leave that to my sister, who I can only assume is bouncing off the walls of her room."

She left a brief pause, her eyes resting on the delicate white silk gloves that reminded her so much of those of her youth. Anna had asked if she felt up to wearing them, and it almost felt odd how little she was bothered by the idea.

"You know, you needn't come if you'd prefer not to," she said softly, turning back to Nessarose. "I would much rather you enjoy this visit than feel like you have to attend events you dislike."

      𝘚𝘏𝘌  𝘏𝘈𝘋   never  attended  such  a  dull  and  unengaging  event  ,  though  it  would  be  a  bit  too  forward  to  admit  that  to  her  hostess  .  parties  were  supposed  to  be  exciting  ,  and  have  a  bit  of  kick  in  them  --  even  if  the  aspect  of  fun  was  often  disguised  as  sophistication  regardless  .  but  here  ,  people  seemed  to  stick  to  themselves  ,  and  rarely  ventured  into  conversation  aside  from  their  dates  .  or  ,  otherwise  ,  the  guests  in  their  general  vicinity  .  it  was  almost  saddening  to  watch  ,  much  less  have  to  take  part  in  .      ❛  it  isn’t  the  event  that  i  dislike  ,  per  se  ,  ❜  nessarose  starts  ,  looking  off  in  the  near  distance  again  ,  watching  the  rigidity  of  the  movement  in  the  ballroom  .  ❛  it’s  just  that  the  energy  is  so  different  to  others  i’ve  attended  .  ❜      typically  ,  there  were  things  for  her  to  do  .  people  to  speak  with  outside  of  the  one  she  was  visiting  ,  and  those  who  were  interested  to  meet  one  who  had  travelled  from  so  far  .  here  ,  it  seemed  everyone  was  in  their  own  world  ,  and  she  just  happened  to  be  there  too  .      ❛  i  don’t  mean  to  offend  ,  ❜  she  clarifies  ,  her  hands  held  out  to  drive  that  point  home  ,  almost  as  if  in  a  surrendering  pose  .  ❛  i  just  mean  to  ask  :  is  it  always  so  stoic  ?  ❜

AIR TORE THROUGH HER THROAT WITH each heaving breath. Magic swirled around her hands, delicate light duplicated in her eyes as the storm finally washed through her. Ice and snow clung to all around her, beautiful as it was dangerous. Rarely did the results of her magic look natural, now it was unnerving how unlike the actual winter it appeared.

Elsa turned to face the source of the words, her shoulders finally lowering at the sight of Nessarose. Her hands, while still stiff, slowly dropped to her sides. Standing still, she took a few shuddering breaths through her nose as she looked at the assembled students around them, the shocked and even frightened faces held there. A few cringed as her gaze swept over them, and a small smile of satisfaction lifted the corners of her mouth. Elsa had always dreaded the day her peers would look at her with fear in their eyes, and yet at that moment she felt vindicated.

Straightening her spine, she walked to Nessa’s side, the crunch of fresh snow under her shoes as familiar as breathing.

“Let them whisper about a new subject for a while,” she murmured, her heart still aching at the loss of her friend. She couldn’t imagine how Nessarose was dealing with Elphaba’s disappearance.

      𝘐𝘛  𝘞𝘈𝘚   almost  insulting  to  find  her  like  this  ,  behaving  as  though  the  possibility  of  magic  wasn’t  the  most  dangerous  thing  that  had  happened  to  this  school  .  the  fact  that  it  was  offered  as  a  class  was  no  longer  relevant  --  magic  must  be  controlled  ,  and  it  could  never  be  completely watched  over  when  there  were  a  select  few  that  could  transcend  the  bounds  of  the  curriculum  .       ❛  don’t  be  so  naïve  ,  ❜  she  snaps  ,  feeling  for  one  of  the  first  times  what  effect  this  has  had  on  her  .  rumors  spread  ,  and  things  were  said  about  her  entire  family  ;  they  intended  to  use  elphaba  for  bad  ,  that  elphaba  would  come  to  munchkinland  first  ,  that  nessarose  was  next  (  only  her  powers  weren’t  strong  enough  ,  yet  )  .  ❛  they  don’t  need  another  thing  to  whisper  about  .  haven’t  you  heard  all  that  they’ve  said  so  far  ?  do  it  for  your  family  ,  if  not  your  friends  .  ❜

      she knows the portrait is smeared with blood . only the corner , it was hardly noticeable to the judge . an act of defiance , a rebellion . she would not be his ! she wanted to cry . johanna would never be . yet she was trapped in his fist . stricken down at the first step .    

     every girl wanted a beautiful wedding . white , frilly , flowered . weddings were beautiful . it was a pity the first one johanna ever attended was her own . & she knows how that was . she had nothing to compare it to .  

     ❝it sounds beautiful .❞& johanna wishes she can be there for this imaginary wedding . though she does not know if the judge will allow her . it took him catching her with a bottle of arsenic nearing her lips for him to allow this one visit .❝we will have to find you the perfect dress , then . one that works for an inside wedding & for one outdoors .❞

     a shaky hand reaches for the drawer , fingers crease the first paper inside . nessa deserves a better look of her wedding , since it seems she is close to having her own . not the blood stained wedding day johanna knows . the sketch was for the artist , but it was left behind when the frame containing the actual painted portrait was dropped off .❝this is the sketch the artist drew as a reference , ’ johanna whispers , ‘ if you want to see it .❞

     her expression is blank . eyes are empty of the sadness she saw in the mirror that day . the artist did her a service . johanna did not look sad . merely empty . her small frame compared to the judge’s made her look like a mouse caught by a cat . she hates looking at it . it is only another reminder .❝would you like your portrait to be painted for your wedding , too ?❞

      𝘊𝘈𝘙𝘌𝘍𝘜𝘓  𝘏𝘈𝘕𝘋𝘚   reach  for  the  portrait  ,  her  gaze  once  again  becoming  quite  jealous  of  her  friend  .  it  didn’t  matter  if  the  wedding  wasn’t  as  memorable  as  johanna  had  wanted  it  to  be  ;  the  dress  was  beautiful  ,  if  not  modest  (  though  it  suited  her  typical  style  ,  so  nessarose  didn’t  see  any  problem  )  and  she  looked  beautiful  .  more  importantly  ,  she  was  with  someone  who  so  desperately  wanted  to  be  with  her  .      the  circumstances  of  johanna’s  marriage  were  certainly  unusual  ,  but  nessa  could  not  be  one  to  judge  ;  different  regions  had  different  customs  ,  and  it  would  be  terribly  rude  to  assume  the  worst  of  someone  based  solely  on  how  it  appeared  to  her  --  especially  considering  the  fact  that  she  was  as  much  of  an  outsider  as  possible  .      ❛  oh  ,  you  look  absolutely  beautiful  ,  ❜  nessa  says  ,  fantasizing  of  one  day  having  her  own  wedding  ,  with  a  painter  there  to  capture  her  joy  .  johanna  looked  so  mature  ,  lacking  the  youth  that  she  has  even  now  .  weddings  did  that  ,  she  supposes  .  ❛  i’ll  have  to  get  the  contact  information  for  whomever  did  this  .  ❜      a  pause  ,  silence  filling  the  air  for  a  few  moments  .  nessa  feels  somewhat  foolish  ,  speaking  as  if  she  really  were  getting  married  .  not  only  did  boq  seem  uninterested  in  truly  settling  down  ,  but  her  father  was  against  the  idea  of  her  marrying  someone  so  common  (  and  ,  as  long  as  he  was  alive  ,  forbade  it  )  .      ❛  that  is  ,  when  the  time  comes  for  me  ,  ❜  she  corrects  herself  ,  clearing  her  throat  just  slightly  ,  in  an  attempt  to  hide  the  truth  behind  her  silence  .  ❛  my  father  doesn’t  want  me  rushing  into  things  ,  yet  wants  me  to  be  paired  off  ,  so  to  speak  ,  before  he  passes  .  ❜

                  it   is   her   first   time   at   the   opera   .   a   rite   of   passage   for   girls   her   age   ,   though   her   own   childhood   was   far   from   the   typical   one   of   most   anyone   else   .   she   should   be   more   excited   .   there   is   no   reason   for   all   of   her   nervousness   .   

                  perhaps   ,   it   is   the   crowds   surrounding   them   .   they   are   overwhelming   .   not   to   the   point   of   intense   anxiety   ,   but   they   did   not   help   .   her   right   leg   bounces   up   &   down   lightly   ,   shaking   the   arm   holding   the   program   .   

                  a   nod   .   gentle   ,   slow   at   first   ,   but   soon   it   quickens   .   ❝   oh   ,   yes   .   ❞   once   the   actual   performance   starts   ,   it   will   distract   her   from   any   silly   worries   she   might   have   had   .   ❝   it’s   both   our   first   times   actually   here   ,   ❞   she   adds   ,   ❝   you   must   be   just   bursting   with   excitement   since   you   seem   to   know   more   about   the   opera   than   i   do   .   ❞

      𝘛𝘙𝘜𝘛𝘏𝘍𝘜𝘓𝘓𝘠  ,  𝘕𝘌𝘚𝘚𝘈𝘙𝘖𝘚𝘌   was  quite  excited  to  see  the  show  .  stories  of  romance  and  drama  had  always  been  a  selling  point  for  her  ,  and  she  knew  all  of  how  operas  could  be  filled  with  both  --  her  heart  was  racing  with  excitement  ,  she  was  sure  johanna  would  be  able  to  feel  it  echoing  off  of  the  walls  of  the  house  .      ❛  i’d  like  this  to  be  the  first  of  many  trips  to  the  opera  ,  ❜  she  says  ,  her  mind  wandering  for  just  a  moment  to  her  future  ;  it  held  something  akin  to  a  season  ticket  to  the  local  theatre  ,  seeing  shows  open  and  maybe  even  coming  back  for  a  second  performance  ,  if  it  was  that  good  .  ❛  i  just  hope  that  it  doesn’t  disappoint  me  .  ❜      and  with  the  crowds  the  way  they  were  ,  nessa  could  see  slight  disappointment  .  of  course  ,  when  it  could  be  done  her  way  (  that  is  ,  when  she  was  in  power  ,  or  her  father’s  second - hand  )  she  could  demand  anything  .  would  it  be  too  much  to  request  a  private  show  ?  maybe  it  was  more  reasonable  to  just  command  everyone  stay  silent  for  the  entirety  of  the  performance  .      ❛  but  we  must  keep  an  open  mind  ,  ❜  nessarose  continues  ,  speaking  more  to  herself  than  her  viewing - mate  .  she  casts  a  gaze  on  the  incessant  bouncing  of  johanna’s  leg  .  ❛  do  you  need  to  get  up  for  a  minute  ?  ❜

                  eyes   are   directed   at   the   pink   cake   her   friend   refers   to   .   a   work   of   art   in   itself   ,   it   seems   to   only   get   prettier   upon   closer   inspection   .   she   has   to   agree   with   johanna   .   blown   away   &   overwhelmed   at   the   shop   ,   she   finds   herself   hardly   able   to   steady   herself   .   it’s   magical   ,   of   course   ,   but   it   gives   one   the   feeling   of   starting   a   book   for   the   first   time   .   confused   until   more   worldbuilding   is   established   .   

                  ❝   is   that   alright   with   you   ?   ❞   it   seems   alright   ,   but   a   wave   of   hesitation   rolls   over   johanna   .   she   was   excited   to   make   this   a   special   day   for   her   friend   .   a   birthday   !   such   a   day   was   rarely   celebrated   in   the   judge’s   household   .   never   ,   actually   .   &   she   knows   her   friend   endured   a   growing   -   up   a   little   too   close   to   the   one   johanna   did   .   she   knows   birthdays   are   special   .   they   should   be   treated   as   such   .   

                  a   finger   graces   her   lips   before   saying   ,   ❝   we   will   get   the   cake   -   if   that’s   what   you   want   -   &   then   i   think   perhaps   a   break   ?   i   don’t   want   to   overwhelm   you   .   we   can   do   anything   you   want   to   do   .   ❞

      𝘌𝘝𝘌𝘕  𝘐𝘍   they  did  decide  to  order  a  cake  ,  nessarose  hardly  thinks  that  it  would  be  completed  --  and  then  the  point  of  purchasing  a  cake  would  be  gone  .  it  was  ,  in  all  ways  ,  better  to  just  get  one  that  was  already  completed  .  she  smiles  at  the  dessert  ,  admiring  just  how  beautiful  it  was  .  the  blush  color  covered  the  entirety  of  the  cake  ,  but  along  the  edges  there  was  fluffy  white  ribbons  of  frosting  ,  as  well  as  fondant  roses  .  it  was  more  than  appropriate  for  her  ,  which  made  it  all  that  more  perfect  .      ❛  yes  ,  i  think  the  cake  will  be  a  perfect  fit  ,  ❜  nessa  concludes  along  with  her  friend  ,  hoping  that  her  enthusiasm  is  enough  to  convince  johanna  of  her  sincerity  .  whyever  would  she  lie  over  something  as  silly  as  a  cake  ?  ❛  and  i  agree  that  a  break  would  be  nice  now  .  ❜      her  and  johanna  had  always  seen  eye  to  eye  on  that  of  social  interactions  .  while  both  of  them  behaved  like  proper  ladies  ,  willing  to  socialize  and  be  polite  ,  they  both  had  somewhat  of  a  low  tolerance  for  it  ;  their  need  for  a  step  away  from  the  action  aligned  quite  well  .      ❛  we  can  buy  the  cake  ,  and  then  go  to  the  park  ,  ❜  she  suggests  ,  knowing  that  it  will  be  taken  to  heart  .  it  was  her  day  ,  after  all  .  a  bit  of  a  giggle  .  ❛  maybe  we  could  even  try  a  bit  of  it  ,  and  act  as  though  we  go  there  often  .  ❜

                  she   wants   to   say   it   only   took   one   look   &   she   was   desperately   &   hopelessly   in   love   .   that   no   force   on   earth   could   tear   them   apart   .   johanna   tells   herself   it   was   at   first   sight   ,   first   sight   ,   first   sight   !   again   &   again   .   though   she   does   remember   that   moment   .   as   it   was   .   feelings   of   hopelessness   ,   frustration   ,   melancholy   burning   in   her   chest   ,   knowing   she   could   not   escape   her   situation   .   but   eyes   fell   upon   a   loving   look   .   infatuation   .   kindness   .   it   was   all   there   in   his   eyes   .   there   was   a   path   out   of   this   darkness   -   &   it   was   him   .   anthony   hope   .   she   wants   to   say   her   heart   sang   the   way   her   birds   did   ,   but   her   birds   did   not   sing   .   

                  anthony   tells   her   ,   whispers   it   into   her   loose   locks   of   gold   when   they   are   laying   in   bed   at   night   ,   that   he   loved   her   at   their   very   first   glance   .   that   moment   of   breathlessness   of   joy   of   wonder   .   excitement   !   everything   was   there   .   &   johanna   always   hesitates   -   only   for   a   mere   second   -   because   she   knows   it   was   not   the   same   ,   but   she   cannot   disappoint   anthony   .   her   husband   .   johanna   is   in   love   with   him   .   that   is   not   the   lie   .   she   adores   him   with   every   fiber   of   her   being   .   but   the   moment   she   fell   in   love   was   the   moment   he   took   her   gentle   hand   ,   looking   into   her   eyes   (   her   eyes   !   no   one   actually   looked   into   her   eyes   before   )   &   told   her   be   not   afraid   .   in   that   moment   ,   she   knew   .

      𝘛𝘏𝘌𝘐𝘙  𝘊𝘖𝘜𝘙𝘛𝘐𝘕𝘎   had  been  a  series  of  coincidences  ,  and  being  in  the  right  place  at  the  right  time  ,  for  lack  of  a  better  description  .  he  had  been  there  with  her  at  school  ,  which  was  lucky  in  it  of  itself  ,  and  they  both  had  been  available  and  interested  in  each  other  when  the  opportunity  for  a  dance  had  arisen  (  another  lucky  moment  ,  that  likely  couldn’t  be  recreated  if  they  tried  )  .  from  then  ,  there  had  been  gazes  ,  which  nessarose  would  describe  as  loving  ,  though  she  can’t  be  sure  if  boq  would  say  the  same  ;  that  night  ,  he  was  rather  nervous  .      ❛  we  were  classmates  first  ,  ❜  nessa  says  ,  recalling  the  days  when  she  knew  of  the  boy  as  nothing  more  than  the  student  in  her  history  seminar  who  reminded  her  of  home  --  as  terribly  boring  of  a  memory  it  was  .  ❛  but  he  was  always  quite  kind  to  me  ,  and  to  everyone  .  ❜      the  lies  had  warped  so  much  into  truth  that  nessa  herself  no  longer  knew  what  was  true  and  what  was  the  version  of  boq  that  she  had  created  in  her  head  .      ❛  but  i  knew  that  i  was  in  love  with  him  the  moment  we  were  first  alone  with  one  another  .  ❜  her  cheeks  turn  pink  ,  quickly  worried  that  johanna  might  take  it  the  wrong  way  .  ❛  that  is  ,  our  first  time  going  on  a  date  .  i  just  knew  he  was  the  one  .  it  felt  right  .  ❜

Seamus was no expert on the area — but he was someone who picked up directions quickly. A day or two wandering around, and he could at least pretend that he was supposed to be there.

" I'm afraid I can't help you if I don't know who your sister is, " he says with a lighthearted chuckle. " Where are you heading ? I might be able to help, if you'd like me to. "

Approaching, he offers out a polite hand. " Name's Seamus; and, you are ? "

      𝘖𝘍  𝘊𝘖𝘜𝘙𝘚𝘌   ,  if  nessarose  described  her  sister  to  him  ,  he  would  likely be  able  to  remember  her  (  if  he  had  seen  elphaba  ,  that  is  )  .  but  there  was  no  need  to  draw  attention  to  something  unless  it  was  absolutely  necessary  ,  and  it  wasn’t  even  close  to  being  that  point  yet  .      ❛  well  ,  i  was  supposed  to  meet  her  outside  of  the  library  ,  but  this  isn’t  it  ,  ❜  nessa  explains  ,  the  lack  of  a  notable  building  being  her  first  clue  .  she  had  followed  the  directions  very  clearly  ,  but  something  hadn’t  gone  right  .  ❛  i  would  appreciate  any  help  ,  seamus  .  my  name  is  nessarose  ,  and  it’s  nice  to  meet  you  .  ❜

     oh  gosh  is  it  july  2nd  again  ??  i  guess  it’s  time  for  my  yearly  post  where  i  get  super  sappy  and  super  emotion  for  no  reason  .  but  ,  let’s  be  real  --  there  totally  is  a  reason  ,  and  it’s  the  fact  that  i’ve  had  this  hobby  for  five  whole  years  .  that’s  literally  half  a  decade  !!  wtf  !!        i  don’t  know  how  much  i  have  to  say  ,  but  i  just  want  to  thank  everyone  for  making  this  such  a  fun  five  years  .  i  never  ever  thought  that  i  would  still  be  here  obsessing  over  a  d - list  musical  character  ,  but  i  am  and  i  couldn’t  have  done  it  without  all  of  you  willing  to  write  with  me  !!        i  truly  want  to  thank  everyone  for  giving  me  a  chance  to  explore  nessarose  and  giving  me  all  of  your  wonderful  muses  to  write  with  as  well  :)  i  just  really  appreciate  how  supportive  and  kind  all  of  my  mutuals  have  been  over  the  years  ,  especially  those  of  you  that  have  been  here  for  all  five  (  which  is  impressive  ,  and  i  applaud  you  )  .      here’s  to  another  year  !!  thank  you  all  <3

                  head   moves   in   a   knowing   nod   .   fathers   did   tend   to   be   that   way   .   while   their   children   longed   for   something   (   whether   that   be   an   extra   treat   or   to   go   explore   the   city   )   ,   they   say   they   know   what’s   best   for   their   children   &   dismiss   it   .   cosette   would   never   dream   of   not   having   her   papa   -   him   finding   her   at   that   inn   was   the   best   thing   that   ever   happened   to   her   !   but   she   can   understand   nessa’s   father   being   more   reluctant   to   the   idea   .   ❝   once   a   week   does   seem   like   a   good   alternative   .   ❞   her   smile   hints   of   a   smirk   as   her   face   lights   up   .   ❝   nessarose   thropp   ,   are   you   suggesting   we   borrow   money   from   our   fathers   &   spend   it   on   something   as   silly   as   macaroons   ?   because   i   am   a   full   one   -   hundred   perfect   on   board   with   the   idea   .   ❞

      𝘏𝘌𝘙  𝘍𝘈𝘛𝘏𝘌𝘙   was  always  willing  to  give  a  bit  of  spending  money  ,  and  her  spending  it  on  an  indulgent  treat  would  be  a  breath  of  fresh  air  to  him  ;  frexspar  had  grown  into  the  concerns  of  other  parents  sending  their  daughters  into  the  city  ,  worried  that  she  may  be  buying  things  that  he  doesn’t  approve  of  .  finding  out  that  the  two  girls  were  using  it  to  buy  cookies  was  the  least  of  his  worries  .      ❛  i  think  we  would  be  alright  with  the  idea  of  us  having  a  day  in  the  city  every  so  often  ,  ❜  nessa  says  with  a  bit  of  a  giggle  ,  covering  her  face  just  slightly  with  a  hand  .  it  was  something  that  she  always  wanted  to  do  ,  spending  a  day  together  with  a  friend  and  re - enacting  the  things  young  ladies  were  meant  to  do  ,  like  what  she  had  read  and  seen  in  so  many  books  and  magazines  .  ❛  but  he  would  never  let  me  go  alone  .  my  sister  would  tag  along  ,  and  she  might  catch  onto  our  spending  habits  .  ❜

𝘑𝘖𝘏𝘈𝘕𝘕𝘈 𝘉𝘈𝘙𝘒𝘌𝘙  :  ycllowhaired

                  as   she   doesn’t   want   to   outright   verbally   insult   anthony’s   friends   ,   she   is   hesitant   to   say   anything   more   .   they   tease   her   ,   whistle   after   her   when   anthony   wasn’t   around   ,   make   the   crudest   jokes   even   in   front   of   her   .   it’s   a   miracle   they   didn’t   rub   off   of   anthony   .   yet   somehow   anthony   hadn’t   rubbed   off   on   them   .   she   nods   .   

                  she   understands   boq   completely   .   part   of   her   is   tempted   to   stage   a   fainting   ,   though   ,   johanna   knows   it   won’t   end   up   in   her   own   favor   .   with   anthony’s   protective   nature   (   a   trait   ,   she   adores   ,   but   in   this   scenero   ,   she   doesn’t   see   it   playing   well   for   her   )   ,   he   will   fetch   the   doctor   &   she   will   have   to   endure   more   tiresome   ordeal   of   having   to   reassure   everyone   that   she   was   fine   .   besides   ,   johanna   was   thankful   for   the   time   she   gets   to   spend   with   nessa   .   between   their   latest   traveling   adventures   &   adjusting   ,   there   hasn’t   been   much   time   .   

                  ❝   you   must   be   enjoying   yourself   ,   then   .   ❞   a   pause   as   johanna   realized   her   statement   didn’t   make   much   sense   at   all   .   she   rushes   to   add   ,   ❝   since   boq   is   here   .   ❞   she   should   have   known   ,   of   course   ,   that   boq   would   take   nessa   .   it   wouldn’t   make   very   much   sense   if   someone   else   besides   anthony   took   johanna   .   ❝   the   two   of   you   are   doing   well   ?   ❞   she   knows   her   words   are   vague   ,   but   she   does   wonder   if   their   relationships   is   doing   as   well   as   nessa   makes   it   seem   .   

      𝘏𝘌𝘙  𝘋𝘈𝘛𝘌   was  far  less  an  impressive  actor  than  she  ,  though  nessarose  supposes  that  she  has  a  bit  more  experience  throughout  her  childhood  ,  playing  the  role  of  a  satisfied  child  to  appease  her  father  .  the  way  boq  refused  to  be  with  her  longer  than  a  few  minutes  was  the  first  of  red  flags  ,  many  of  which  their  fellow  attendees  picked  up  on  --  and  then  brought  up  to  her  ,  as  if  she  couldn’t  see  it  as  clear  as  day  !  nessa  could  be  naïve  at  times  ,  but  she  wasn’t  a  fool  .      ❛  i  suppose  we  are  ,  ❜  she  says  in  return  ,  her  words  just  as  vague  and  unrevealing  .  johanna  was  the  last  person  to  judge  her  ,  yet  nessarose  never  liked  to  verbalize  the  issues  that  were  present  in  her  relationship  .  it  was  hard  to  see  a  problem  when  it  was  never  acknowledged  ,  and  ignored  so  well  .  ❛  it’s  one  of  those  stagnant  points  ,  you  know  ?  we’ve  settled  into  each  other  nicely  .  it’s  a  good  thing  .  ❜

𝘛𝘖𝘗𝘏𝘌𝘙  :  adveanture

HER   SMILE   AND   WORDS   PUT   HIM   AT   EASE,   AT   LEAST   A   LITTLE   BIT.         topher   doesn’t   have   many   friends,   just   as   there   are   not   many   places   he   has   seen   outside   of   his   home   and   school.      and   none   of   his   friends   are   girls.      he   has   never   spoken   much   with   many   young   women,   in   fact.      his   sister   marries   when   he   is   still   very   young,   and   she   moves   to   her   husband’s   kingdom   thereafter.      topher   might   have   worried   over   this   more   than   necessary.      nessarose,   at   least,   hardly   seems   more   intimidating   than   any   other   well-spoken   or   well-born   peer.  

“      where   is   it   that   you   study?      ”            he   asks,   excited   at   finding   a   source   of   commonality   there.      if   he   is   to   make   a   fool   of   himself   talking   of   her   homeland,   perhaps   he   will   not   conversing   of   school.            “      i   have   only   attended   boarding   schools   in   my   life,   and   none   of   them   have   been   near   oz,   i’m   afraid.      ”            and   none   of   them   have   any   girls   in   attendance,   either.      but   topher   doesn’t   explain   that.  

      𝘛𝘏𝘌  𝘛𝘖𝘗𝘐𝘊   of  conversation  was  one  that  was  safe  ,  to  say  the  least  .  the  chattering  of  two  school - aged  young  adults  landed  on  a  common  ground  ,  that  of  their  studies  ;  even  the  most  socially  stunted  and  awkward  of  people  could  carry  a  conversation  about  that  .  not  to  mention  ,  nessarose  felt  especially  unsure  of  what  to  discuss  with  a  boy  ,  the  feeling  almost  worsening  than  how  it  would  have  been  before  her  days  at  university  .  now  ,  she  was  all  too  aware  of  the  standards  that  were  in  place  ,  and  what  boys  like  topher  may  expect  .      ❛  did  you  pass  through  the  emerald  city  on  your  way  here  ?  ❜  nessa  asks  ,  assuming  that  his  geographical  knowledge  was  lacking  in  all  areas  of  her  country  .  ❛  it’s  in  a  city  called  shiz  ,  of  which  the  school  shares  its  name  with  .  nowadays  ,  it  really  is  a  bit  of  a  college  town  ,  but  quaint  nonetheless  .  did  you  travel  often  for  your  education  ?  ❜
