Summary: Cas is gone and Dean doesn't know how to deal. Sunk deep into the worst depression he's ever been through Dean only pulls himself together when Jack comes to visit, intent on repairing his relationship with Castiel's son. Eventually, as a result of an offhanded comment Sam makes, Dean begins to dream of a better future and becomes determined to rescue Castiel from the Empty. It's a rough go, but he's successful and Cas is back.

Fed nightmares during his time in the darkness of an angel's afterlife, Castiel doesn't believe that Dean is real. Refusing to speak or to come out of the literal closet, will Cas let Dean persuade him that he really is saved?

Commentary: This is one of the first fics I read in this fandom, so I feel very nostalgic about it (well, not that it was that long ago).

The narrative of this story is pretty much devided into two parts - first we see Dean grief and then he gets Cas back from the Empty and we see them together (this part is longer).

I think the author did such a good job with the description of the feelings, thoughts and other behaviors Dean would've been going through. Dean is honest with himself about his feelings for Castiel and there are some great scenes of him being a good parental figure for Jack.

The story also explores Dean's and Cas' relationship with Jack, Claire, Sam, Eileen, Jody, Donna etc...all the characters have time to shaer with Dean and Cas, making the story have more layers and the characters be more complex.

If you consider the Empty lore we learn in season 15 canon (I often ignore it), then Cas was fed his worst nightmares there. It's like Hell for Angels and demons, but with mental torture, not just physical. So, when Dean rescues him from the empty, it makes sense that he thinks this is another nightmare.

The story goes on, Cas lives with Dean (they don't share a room lol), feelings are talked out etc etc.

I really enjoy this one, I think the way the author describes magic theory, explores lore and makes up spells is so creative and well done. One of my favorite Empty rescues in fanfic!

The down side is that it is overlly cheesy at times and there are some cringe lines and exchanges.

A Tough Nut To Crack

On the other side of the nest, Cas is curled into a tight ball, his tail flipped over his nose like a blanket. Dean wonders if he’s cold too. It’s dark inside their nest, almost pitch black with how the maple leaves block out the starlight. Cas is nothing but a lump, but Dean bets that if they were lumps together, they’d be warmer. It’s not gay if they’re huddling for warmth, right? It should also be taken into account that they’re squirrels, and he’s pretty sure it’s not gay if they’re squirrels, either.
