In Gaming: Q1 2017

This is the third entry into the public log of what I’ve been playing recently. I write In Gaming to remember what I played and to serve as a list of recommendations for readers.

Inside

INSIDE is full of wonder. Because it’s wonderful when dark media is highly successful. It’s wonderful when a game ends up being everything it wanted to be. It’s a world of wondrous atmosphere, and the ending is utterly unforgettable, still astonishing my memory to the present day. My jaw hung in wonder as I engaged in the final sequence, all to be met with simple tranquility in the end. Her Story

In Her Story, you will be searching a police database for footage from interviews involving Her. You do this by keying in search terms, with a limit of five results per term. It’s very well done! Her Story presents (ahem) her story in such a manner that you will constantly be thinking you’ve figured the story out, that this one thing you just learned that blew your mind, was relevant to understanding the bigger picture. Then you will learn you were wrong, will curse your hubris, and fall for it all again.

What makes that remarkable is that you have done it to yourself. The game couldn’t be any less linear: you are choosing what to watch next, what to find next. No two players will take the exact same path to the end. When I ran out of the obvious search terms, I started pumping in some generic words that would develop the fringes of the story until I found that one term which would quickly lead to another twist and even more search terms. It was a unique experience and incredibly, I only completed 50% of the game. (I believe 40% was the minimum to “finish” it) I’m not quite special enough to sit in front of a virtual terminal trying search term after search term, but if you are, they give you cheats that open the number of results returned to fifteen and allow you to randomly unlock clips.

Darkest Dungeon I finally finished Darkest Dungeon on week 116. I am not ashamed to say I backed up saves to do it. I just couldn’t justify the grind anymore.

I was mostly pleased with the ending. The story was predictable, but the boss battle was very creative and really had me feeling like I’d killed every constituent of the beast. I am now very comfortable recommending DD to people with its new Radiant Mode, which reduces the grind significantly.

Brave Diggers (removed from play store) Just this morning I found out that a game I was highly invested in, going as far as managing a guild and always being at the top of the PvP list, will be shutting down on May 31st, 2017. They gave us $75 in premium currency and said that if we desire, they will convert all our purchases from the past three months into premium currency in any other of their games.

That's a hefty amount, considering I’ve spent $75 since February. Brave Diggers hooked me and I knew exactly what they were doing, and what I was doing. In the end, Google Play tells me I spent $130 total on Brave Diggers. Some of that was buffered by “Google Play Rewards”, essentially free money for taking very short surveys. $130′s pretty insane for a mobile game and I may find the inspiration to write a post about why I spent and what the game meant to me.

To get the most out of Brave Diggers, I will be finding the time to go through every character and reading their bio, because the main driver for my enjoyment of the game was how funny/quirky it could be. I know the best dad jokes mankind can offer, learned from the game. It was just a fun time.

Fallout Shelter What a fun game, ruined by bad luck, abysmal load times, and considerable memory usage.

Pokemon Go While waiting in line at a theme park, I simply thought to myself “hey, pokemon go...” and this recommenced my journey to be a Pokemon master. I’m almost level 26, and I don’t think I’ll be endeavoring to any gyms this time around. Though there are whispers of a gym rework coming soon...

Guild Wars 2 and rambling about achievements

GW2 will always be on the list, but I’d spent an inordinate amount of time playing it from Jan-Mar, doing every little thing. At one point I was raiding twice a week. Recently, leading up to my wedding, I decided it was time to put the game into “daily mode” and seek out more meaningful experiences in gaming. I have been filling my time up by trying to get as many Achievement Points (AP) as I can. This has brought me to areas of the game I’d forgotten or even, impossibly, not known about. PvP is finally in a good spot. Some people felt balance was great in Season 5, but only post-season 5 do I really feel like we have close to the diversity I desire. It also happens that I’ve become very good at PvP and they added (after four years) achievements to every PvP map, so I have a lot of reason to be in right now. The Doric reward track helps as well, because every two completions gives me an ascended backpiece for one of my alts.

As long as I can remember, my goal has been to get 30,000 AP. When I get there, I will finally be able to unlock the full set of Hellfire Armor, which is both sexy and prestigious. I have 26,600 right now. I am not striving for the accompanying 39,000 AP backpiece because I don’t really want it. I get 10 AP every time I complete a daily, but that’s capped at 15k AP, and I only have 1.5k more of that pool to exhaust, or a little less than three months.
