NUCLEAR ASSAULT - Handle With Care 12" (1989, USA, In-Effect//USA) Much like how Skate Rock Vol. 3 was responsible for opening the door to more varieties of nastier sounding hardcore punk for me, there was this crappy looking tape comp that was responsible for my first exposure to some of the lesser known metal bands of the time: Trouble, Nuclear Assault, Heathen and a bunch of others. I don't even remember what the comp was called, was it a K-Tel comp? No idea. I think I bought the tape at Big Lots of all places. Anyway, Justice by Nuclear Assault was on that tape. I really loved the thrashy rawness and the strange sounding, howling vocals. Nuclear Assault became one of my favorite bands of my teenage years and even though Handle With Care was not the first album of theirs that I heard, it's the one that had the greatest impact on me. The music goes back and forth between cacophonous rabble and that perfect fist-pumping, head-banging time signature while the lyrics have an almost ridiculous positive political tone when you compare it how the music sounds. Songs about keeping a positive mental attitude, environmental awareness, vivisection, etc. it's like a thrash metal Gorilla Biscuits. Even though Game Over is probably most peoples' favorite or only liked record of this band, Handle With Care remains my favorite and still sounds incredible to me on this day.
