james jean - osmanthus (2024)

jamesjeanart : I created a new piece, Osmanthus, for the 30th anniversary of @giantrobot. During this mid-autumn moment, the osmanthus flower blooms, and we contemplate the passage of time. I first read Giant Robot magazine around 2001 or 2002, when I was living in Brooklyn and generally clueless af. The magazine revealed a new world of Hong Kong films, indy comics, sussy baka food reviews, and obscure Asian traits that drew me in, and I followed its siren call out west. It defined a space of belonging that was absent for most of my childhood and adolescence. It took a while, but I finally got onto the cover of Giant Robot. As the osmanthus fades, the moment for magazines has passed, but the gallery and store live on in the heart of Sawtelle Japantown. 💙 [posted 2024 oct 6]
