Some things I have discovered about making incense bundles:

Spruce is not as good for this as initially thought. The short needles fall out very easily when dry. Either I need to tie them tighter, or I need to sandwich the spruce twigs between something else.

Pine needles don’t stay lit very well, and need to be trimmed after burning.

JUNIPER PRICKLY!!! Smells great tho.

Fiddly little things, like dried flowers, or bits of root or bark, can be wrapped up in larger leaves, like basil or sage, and inserted into the bundle that way. They’ll fall out otherwise.

Powdered things, such as sandalwood or myrrh, can be painted onto sage leaves, because they are fuzzy. Any more resin than that though, would probably be a bad idea.

That only works for fuzzy leaves, however. My culinary sage is perfect for this, but my pineapple sage, not so much.

The stick part of rosemary twigs also doesn’t stay lit very well, but also smells pretty nice.
