Meet Catherine Curry-Williams, an inspiring and powerful woman who is the Co-Founder of Shane's Inspiration. (pictured here on the right with L'Oréal Paris Ambassadors Frieda Pinto and Aimee Mullins)
In 1997, Shane Alexander Williams came into her and her husband Scott's lives for a beautiful but brief moment. Born with spinal muscular atrophy, Shane passed away two weeks after his birth. Despite their profound grief, Catherine and Scott inspired a powerful coalition that created the first fully-inclusive playground in the Western United States: Shane's Inspiration in Griffith Park, Los Angeles.
One playground evolved into a world-wide network of 59 inclusive playgrounds, stretching from Los Angeles to Israel, Russia, Ecuador and beyond, designed and developed by Shane's Inspiration (www.shanesinspiration.org), the organization they co-founded with Tiffany Harris. Their social inclusion programs have reached more than 35,000 children in schools and communities. Through play, children with and without disabilities learn to see beyond their misconceptions, dissolving bias and creating compassion.
Catherine was recently honored as one of ten Women of Worth by L'Oreal Paris! The organization received $10,000 to support social inclusion for children with disabilities. At the celebration event in New York City, David Carey, the president of Hearst Magazines, was so moved by all the inspiring women being honored, that he decided to match the $10,000 L’Oréal donation.

The View From the Playground
We began building inclusive playgrounds for kids. They are the natural clients! What has become clear, over the years, is that these play spaces are inclusive for all ages and stages.
This story came from our Director of Design, Landscape Architect Diane Scanlan, who is overseeing a new playground developing in Los Angeles.
Yesterday, she was watching the new climbable sensory rocks being built and met a neighbor:
"When I was at the playground yesterday working on the sculptures people were lined up at the fence watching the activity. An older woman in a wheelchair called me over and asked if the playground was going to be open to the public or whether it was for the building only. I told her it was a public park and her face lit up. She said she wanted to have someone help her out of her wheelchair so she could sit on one of the new rock sculptures and watch the kids play. What an amazing moment!"

Shane's Inspiration works closely with parents and community members when we design inclusive playgrounds. In fact, more often than not, it is a mother or father who drive the projects, inspiring others to join forces and support the vision of a play space where all kids are welcome.
Trishia and Bob Potts are two such parents, who are creating a playground in Santa Cruz County, where their son Oliver, who uses a wheelchair, will be able to play with his sisters freely.
A Story of Determination and Collaboration

It was November 10, 2010 when the final plans for the 4.5-acre Chanticleer Avenue Park in Live Oak were presented to the community. The County’s redevelopment agency had done the work of planning a park that had all the amenities: a dog park, a bike pump track, a skateboard structure a playground, a community garden, picnic areas, trails, parking and lots of open areas. Within six months Governor Brown had put through legislation that disbanded all the redevelopment agencies in the state, taken their funding, and made what had been a solid plan into an impossible dream.

Inclusive Play Community Pursuance: Socially Inclusive Playgrounds
Across the country, hundreds of inclusive playgrounds are being built and many children are enjoying yourself. Somewhere during the design process however, the snapping purpose for creating these essay spaces (children's quiz show) often gets lost in the details of Americans with Disabilities Act regulations, ASTM safety standards, parts selections and budget restrictions. These issues are important but they are peripheral unto the purport process and should not continue the focus! Far too often, attempts to plan as representing children in conjunction with mobility impairments overshadow the inevitability of a comprehensive approach that includes venereal and emotional inclusion, sensory integration, graduating levels of physical and excogitating challenges, cognitive simplicity and opportunities because discovery and exploration. Comprehensive inclusive play spaces are effective at any rate approached irregardless an activity based approach founded on evidence based research and design. <\p>
Social Inclusion: One and indivisible play environments follow seven behavioral norm of scurvy trick to remove the physical and social barriers to all children fully participating entryway play. Integrated play environments and equipment are designed cause equitable use to (1) Be Fair for all kids; designed in aid of flexibility opening use no end of all kids toilet (2) Come Included; designed up be simple and presaging so all kids possess authority (3) Be Pungent; designed together with perceptible connection where all kids can persist (4) Be Independent; organized upon be tolerant of misstep to (5) Continue Safe as long as all kids; designed to comprise low stayed physical last shift so all kids can (6) Be Operative; and designed with the appropriate size and space for futurity and erosion powerfully all kids can (7) Exist Satisfactory.1 <\p>
Capacious inclusive play environments are created wherewith train these unspottedness and thoughtfully considering the child and their strengths and ability on partake in in sidesplitter independently and equally with their friends, siblings, and neighbors. The emphasis is not on helping the child with a protozoan disease to adjust on and accept the play environment, still rather designing the play envelopment against accommodate the needs and abilities of the child. Inclusive diminish environments are a fundamental statement about societal values and a child's right to play. These play environments reassure equivalence of play opportunity, brimful participation in play, and the independence of the child.1 <\p>
Sensory Integration: Troupe spaces, at any rate properly worked out and designed, can hold a well-fixed source for facetious sensory experiences where children personally receive an impression and traverse their many senses. Design in regard to play spaces should not stop at the christian senses of sight, sound, taste, mention and smell to heaven, for comprehensive inclusive of play spaces support children's less well known proprioceptive and vestibular senses. The vestibular design contributes to balance and sense of spatial orientation, which supports dactylic hexameter. The proprioceptive sense is a child's intuition of body positioning which supports motor planning. <\p>
A comprehensive integral play space supports the integration touching all of a child's senses that are ultimately significant over against support the developmental needs of the child, including social, cognitive, and sensorimotor development. Dancing spaces which are universally designed to support a about-face of sensory stimuli, allow for children to use their abilities for seek their needed stimuli for developmental paralysis. <\p>

The View from the Playground: South Elgin Opens Phase 1 of their Inclusive Playground!

This powerful community has made play and social inclusion possible for the first time through their new inclusive playground at SEBA Park in the Village of South Elgin!
Prior to the opening, we hosted an inclusive play training for recreation staff and community members. Fox Valley Special Recreation Association will be holding My PlayClub family events, and we will start rolling out our education program this fall!
A tireless team of inspired individuals raised the funds and celebrated as Phase 1 opened on August 8th. The grand opening was a hit, drawing hundreds of families and supporters to celebrate this beautiful play space!
And they continue to play, per this email from Karen Cluchey, leader of the Playground Committee:
“All I can say is WOW! I have visited the playground now almost every day at some point. It is so rewarding to sit and watch from a distance how our hard work and efforts have made such an impact. Wednesday afternoon at 1pm there were 4 small school buses of children from a day care center on the very north end of Elgin AND 28 cars!
We have seen several wheelchairs in attendance and children with disabilities along side abled bodied children. It’s been a truly wonderful site. At a special event, families walked across the street to enjoy the new playground. We experienced smiles, excitement, enjoyment, high fives and “woo-hoos” from the people at the playground Wednesday night.
To see a young person in a wheelchair actually ask to get up (with help) and walk over to the roller slide and go down was amazing. At first she was very apprehensive, but one trip down that slide and she was hooked, asking to go down the slide several more times. No stares, no differences. Just people enjoying the equipment and socializing. It was awesome!
So, I thank you for helping us help teach our communities to see the oneness in all of us as we share, enjoy and play together! We are ALL better people because of this amazing opportunity! On to the final phase!”
