incredifishface reblogged your post: I have been holding my tongue on this, because of...
i agree with the above. “Serious” does not equal necessarily “emotional depth”, and comedy doesn’t entail lack thereof...
I’m literally not referring to any of your criticisms of Ragnarok that you have written, and I put a note in my post for a reason because while I do not agree with many of the criticisms of Ragnarok around, I respect that people have them.
I do not agree with them because 1) I have seen Loki portrayed similarly in comics, 2) I think people misinterpret and over react to Taika’s personality all the time, and 3) I don’t think being funny = treating everything like a joke.
That’s my opinion. I stand by that. Yet, I haven’t been able to discuss my opinion on anything Ragnarok related without people projecting anti-Ragnarok opinions onto me when I really enjoyed the movie.
No one tags my criticisms of other movies with #anti [insert movie] or #anti [insert creator] or #[insert movie] criticism. No one on my dash openly hates the Russo’s or Whedon or whoever else has been involved in Marvel.
This, despite the issues I have with them.
I am really referring to comments I have seen floating around that put previous and current creators on a pedestal for being more “mature” and “serious” in their projects when they have a lot of the same problems if not more.
To some degree, you are doing that now in reference to the Russo’s previous movies. It’s fine that you have those opinions about them, but there are valid criticisms people have about those films and about them.
Yet, no one is treating the Russo’s as if they have no idea what they are doing because their approach is viewed as more mature, more serious, and more intelligent no matter what they choose to do.
As much as I have issues with certain elements of Ragnarok, I saw elements that demonstrate Taika’s competency as a creator as much as anyone else involved in Marvel which people refuse to see.
He’s not more or less invested or more or less competent because of how he approaches things. I’m not asking for you to like him or his movie, but rather for people to see that his personality =/= less competent, less invested.
I don’t think it’s fair, from my perspective, that I can’t even discuss this issue without people again laying into Taika Waititi and Ragnarok as a whole as that wasn’t the point of this post at all.
It was about creators across Marvel, and how willing people are to disregard the creativity and talent of those who take on a humorous approach vs. those who do not, especially when I have huge criticisms with “serious” male creators.
