Anti-Monarchy Rally.
While heavy handed police arrested protesters in London I saw no signs of any police on Calton Hill on Saturday.
I had planned on going to Glasgow for the AUOB march, but my friends needed a babysitter at short notice after being let down, so I had to stay around Edinburgh.
While there were about twenty thousand at Glasgow, I would say there was a couple of thousand at this rally organised by a group which campaigns for a republic called Our Republic.
Connor Cloughley who hosted the rally said “Three hours ago a man sat on a gilded throne and had the audacity to ask millions of people across the country to swear allegiance to him, his heirs and successors. There hours ago, a crown worth millions was placed on his head at the end of an obscene coronation event that cost the taxpayer over £100 million, while families across the country struggle to feed themselves and struggle to pay their utility bills."
Speakers included Tommy Sheppard MP, Lorna Slater MSP, poet George Gunn, Cllr Ross McKenzie an independent councillor in Edinburgh, Maggie Chapman MSP (who was formerly an Edinburgh councillor Cllr Roza Salih from Glasgow, and storyteller Malini Chakrabarty.
Poet George Gunn who had travelled from Thurso to join the rally, read his own poem, the Oath to the Scottish Republic.
The poem began: “My allegiance is to the Scottish people, to all people be called a British subject and to swear allegiance to a king while my country has no place among nations is to be a ghost and to bear disgrace it is the disposition of all citizens our future republic…”
Pics are my own, but you can find more from the event here

Smithfield Memorials, Part I: William Wallace
The area of Smithfield in the City of London was for many hundreds of years one of the main centres of execution in the capital. Today, the outer walls of St Bartholomew’s hospital carry a selection of memorials to those who died in Smithfield.
Perhaps the most famous execution to take place in Smithfield was that of Sir William Wallace, one of the leaders in the fight for Scottish independence in the 13th and 14th Century (events depicted with a ridiculous amount of historical inaccuracy in the film Braveheart). Wallace had been handed over to English troops near Glasgow, taken to London, tried for treason, and then held in the Tower of London. On the 23rd August 1305, Wallace was dragged (literally, behind a horse), to Smithfield. He was hung, drawn and quartered – a grisly process which involved strangulation to near-death, emasculation, evisceration followed by burning of his intestines, beheading, and finally having his body hacked into four pieces.
The memorial, installed in 1956, summarises Wallace’s dedication to the fight for independence, and how he became an inspiration for those who followed on from him.
Happy 4th of July🎉🎉
To celebrate 4th of July I will share my three favorite 4th of July memories:
1)My family set off one of those fountain fireworks but it didn't go off so we just kinda left it there for awhile. 30 Minutes later that fountain firework went off so suddenly and hard that it knocked itself over and started shooting sparks into our and our neighbors yard. As soon as we got everything under control our neighbors started packing up and about 5 minutes later they left the neighborhood.
2)When my brother was messing around with a Roman Candle and it shot off too soon and hit our neighbors fence and caused it to light on fire.
3) When our neighbors left a massive box of fireworks out shortly after shooting them off and the box eventually caught on fire. The fire eventually spread to their yard.
I think it's important to mention that this all happened on the same night
