Opposition INDIA Bloc Submits No-Confidence Motion Against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar
In a significant political development, members of the opposition alliance, INDIA bloc, have moved a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh announced this move on Tuesday, citing concerns over the alleged partisan conduct of the Chairman during the proceedings of the council of states.
A Step to Safeguard Institutional Integrity
The motion, submitted collectively by various parties within the INDIA bloc, is described as a step to protect the institution of the Rajya Sabha rather than targeting an individual. Speaking on the matter, an opposition leader emphasized that this was not a personal protest but a bid to uphold the sanctity and impartiality of the institution.
“We aim to send a clear message that the concerns raised by the opposition are about preserving the integrity of the institution, not about any specific individual,” stated the leader, who preferred to remain anonymous.
Allegations of Partisan Conduct
According to Jairam Ramesh, the decision to file the motion was driven by Dhankhar’s handling of parliamentary proceedings, which the opposition alleges has been biased. “All parties in the INDIA group had no alternative but to formally submit this motion, given the partisan manner in which the Hon’ble Chairman has conducted the council's business,” Ramesh posted on social media platform X.
Another leader highlighted the Chairman’s decisions to disallow opposition members from raising critical issues as a recurring concern. This perceived lack of fair representation in parliamentary debates has spurred the bloc to act.
Who Signed the Motion?
Several prominent leaders from opposition parties have signed the no-confidence motion. These include Nadimul Haque and Sagarika Ghosh from the Trinamool Congress, Sanjay Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party, and Priyanka Chaturvedi of the Shiv Sena (UBT).
Interestingly, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), which has seven MPs in the Rajya Sabha, has not yet decided its stance on the motion. Speaking to reporters, BJD chief Naveen Patnaik stated, “We are still examining the motion. A decision will be taken based on what we consider necessary.” Notably, the BJD supported Dhankhar’s candidature during the Vice Presidential elections in 2022.
Political Ramifications
The submission of the no-confidence motion underscores the growing friction between the opposition and the ruling establishment. While it remains uncertain how the motion will proceed, it has spotlighted the INDIA bloc’s attempts to consolidate its stance against perceived governmental overreach and lack of impartiality within parliamentary proceedings.
This action also highlights the evolving dynamics within opposition politics, as parties strive to address broader institutional concerns while navigating individual alliances and agendas.
The Road Ahead
As the political landscape heats up, this no-confidence motion has sparked discussions about institutional accountability and the role of opposition in ensuring checks and balances in governance. While the outcome of the motion remains to be seen, the INDIA bloc’s move has drawn attention to the underlying tensions in the functioning of India's parliamentary democracy.
Nitish Kumar May Exit Alliance In Bihar, Likely To Go With BJP Again: Sources
The INDIA bloc appears to be unravelling as a third key leader – Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar – is likely to change camp. Sources said it is likely that Mr Kumar, in a last-minute U-turn, will partner the BJP in the coming Lok Sabha elections.
Over the last two days, two key leaders – Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal– have ruled out any alliance with the Congress in Bengal and Punjab.
For Mr Kumar, 72, this would be the fifth change in camp. Since 2013, he has been swinging between the NDA and the mahagathbandhan, all the while keeping his job in the state intact. He switched sides last in 2022 – barely two years after he had walked out of the Grand Alliance and joined the NDA.
The signs have all been there over the last weeks, with Mr Kumar's comments on dynastic politics and the subsequent retort from Lalu Yadav's daughter expanding the rift. Yesterday, his lack of response to the Congress invite for Bharat Jodo Yatra, put a question mark on his appearance.
The Bharat Ratna for former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur appears to have been a turning point scripted in advance.
Sources said Mr Kumar has been upset over the lack of clarity in INDIA bloc's poll preparations and being passed over as a possible Prime Ministerial candidate. The delays to seat-sharing talks for the Lok Sabha polls had been a further aggravation.
Congress Asserts Importance of Mamata Banerjee in INDIA Bloc Amidst Alliance Uncertainty
In a surprising turn of events, Mamata Banerjee’s announcement of going solo in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal has left the Opposition INDIA bloc in a state of disarray. The Congress, responding to Banerjee’s decision, emphasized that an alliance without the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo is inconceivable.
Addressing the media in a press conference, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh acknowledged the shock caused by Mamata Banerjee’s decision. He underscored the significance of the TMC as “a strong pillar” within the INDIA bloc and expressed the party’s inability to imagine the bloc without Mamata Banerjee.
“Mamata Banerjee stated that the goal is to defeat the BJP, and we are committed to doing whatever it takes. Rahul Gandhi has clearly stated that Mamata Ji and the TMC are integral to the strength of the INDIA bloc. We cannot fathom the existence of the INDIA bloc without Mamata Ji,” Ramesh affirmed.
Ramesh further assured that despite the unexpected development, the INDIA bloc would continue to function as a united front in West Bengal. He expressed optimism about fruitful seat-sharing discussions with the TMC in the future.
“The alliance will operate cohesively in West Bengal. Congress president (Mallikarjun Kharge) has extended invitations multiple times, stating that all INDIA bloc parties are welcome to join the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,” Ramesh stated.
Amidst uncertainties caused by Banerjee’s solo decision, Ramesh conveyed the INDIA bloc’s commitment to uniting against the BJP. He announced that the Congress’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, currently progressing in Assam, would extend into West Bengal with the same purpose.
“While on a long journey, speed breakers and red lights may come our way,” Ramesh noted, symbolizing the challenges faced during such political journeys.
Mamata Banerjee’s decision to sever ties with the Congress emerged following a public exchange with West Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. The TMC leader claimed that the grand old party did not inform her about their planned Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, raising questions about communication within the bloc.
Banerjee’s move has introduced a new complexity to the Opposition’s attempts to present a unified front against the ruling BJP in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. The INDIA bloc now faces the challenge of reshaping its strategy in light of this unexpected development.
