• From rooftop of Brahmin’s house wherein we’d rented tile-floored room on 3’d floor for six months December to May, could see past temple mandir spires to other shore across Ganges River. Our balcony hung over market vegetable meat-piles on one side, other overlooked sacred alley way down to Dasaswamedh Ghat bathing steps peopled by beggars Pilgrims Sadhus & wandering cows. Monkeys visited & snatched our bananas, see Indian Journals for details. Peter Orlovsky held my Retina, Benares India Spring 1963. Ever since return from Gangtok I been sick: first slow cold & yellow phlegm Bronchitis with slight fever, went to a doctor and got Procain Penicillin-streptomyacin mix injection — then my arm hard for several days & slightly swollen, sign of an allergy to the injection: Then lassitude of Calcutta heats & dismay torpor days uncuriously reading — Then at Jamshedpur Bengali Poets conference a slight kidney attack, had to take atropine injection, ad returned to Calcutta tired, still coughing from too much cigarettes — so several days on opium and morphine injected once, and tests for allergy which swelled up right arm worse in protest against minute subcutaneous procaine penicillin, then urine test saying excess phosphorus calcium (oxide?)  in urine followed by sudden dysentery  & bone-weak-tired heat fatigue. — so tonite a nice big fix with the last 1/2 grain morphine -atropine & relaxed now in bed my body feels better & the vision of urinary garbage near chinatown no longer makes me sick at heart - July 11, 1962  (Indian Journals, Grove Press) (Photo: Allen Ginsberg Calcutta, 1962 courtesy Stanford University Libraries/ Allen Ginsberg Estate) #allenginsberg #peterorlovsky #poetry #indianjournals #literature #expats #poetsofinstagram #poetrycommunity #travelers #kolkata #india #beatgeneration (at Kolkata) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxfxpygBKoN/?igshid=1le3bk3tru9g1
